  1. HEY

I have a movie I created using footage from my dv cam. The final uncompressed avi is 1.54 GB, and the movie is 7mins 20 secs long.

I need to compress this for the web:

    1. So people can watch it on the web (very small size - <5 MB -wmv file?)

    2. So people can download it (maybe 15 mb or so- mpeg? smaller avi? how?)

    How can I do this?

I havent a clue where to start, any good progs to do this?

    Thanks all

  3. In addition to what was just mentioned, I'll throw FX Video Converter in. I think it does WMV and I know it does conversion to RM (which is why I have it). It is free as long a you don't want an MPEG1/2 converter. And you'll find enough of those where the last post told you to look.

  4. Yeah, I had a look at the guides on the left, but I didnt find any guides on HOW to compress an avi for the web, and WHAT tools to use, and WHAT format to put it in.

I am still confused as to how to do this.

I hope someone can help. Thx

  5. There's no one "web compression" tool if that's what you are looking for. You could go MPEG or DIVX among other things. Start with this:

for the web you would use windows media (version 8 for compatability) or quicktime most often ..

you can get movie maker from microsoft web site for free which i understands works pretty good ..

you would not want to have divx as your format for the web .. a lot of people are not going to install a codec to watch a movie .. at least if your target is the general public

  8. Hmm. I thought WMP would play divx. Anyway, here's a link to FX. It says it does windows media too if you don't like the microsoft product BJ_M recommended.

  9. ok guys, tried it in virtuadub:

    Video compression: DivX 4.12
Full processing mode (as need to resize video)
Video filter resized the video to 280 x 210
500 kilobits per sec video output
    mp3 audio 40kbits/ps 22,050 hz stereo 5KB/s

My 7 min long video was 30MB, need to halve it again

    what should I do?

What is your framerate? I think virtualdub has a "decimate" filter that I've used before.

  12. I would just like to say:

    ARRGGGHHHHHHHH!

ok, BJ_M, I am using windows media encoder to get the wmv file, this is for streaming on the web - file size is 5MB, which is big enough for a streaming file - the quality is just about acceptable (in some places it is NOT) - but I cant seem to find an alternative so it will have to do for now.

I wanted a file that could be downloaded also - so I am trying a better quality wmv file, then I'll zip it or something.

I dont wanna use DivX as the people who will be watching this won't have a clue what divX is.......

so unless anyone can offer alternatives - I'm stuck

Thanks for the suggestions so far..

Get movie maker from the MS website...

Install and then when it done installing, open it and go to file > Import.

Let movie maker do its job by importing the clip and then then its finnished importing, select all the clips and right click one of them and select the option to add to the strory line. Then click the save movie option in the top and it will let you choose which format do you want to use to stream it into web.
    Next Generation Classic......
