  1. I have several Divx movies that are too big to burn on one DVD. What software can I use to compress the movie file? I purchased TMPEG and it did not work.

    Why did TMPGEnc not work?
    Hello.

  3. When I draged the divx file into TMPGEnc, I kept getting an error message.

  4. What did the error message say? I suspect that your DivX files either had (vbr) mp3 audio or ac3 audio streams. If so you would have to demux the Divx to seperate video and audio files, convert the audio file to wave, then encode with TMPGenc using the divx as the video source and the wave as the audio source.

Also you say you have DivX files which are to big to burn on to DVD. I assume you mean you have some DivX files that you want to use as source material to encode to MPEG2 to make some DVDs. If so, you should know that the the size of the source material has NO effect on the size of the encoded MPEG file.

MPEG file size is based on the bitrate and runtime of the video (resolution doesn't matter either).

  5. The Divx files are too large to fit on the DVD. For example, Scarface is 2 hr. 30 minutes long. That will not fit on the standard 4.7G DVD.

I wanted to convert Divx to mpeg in order to fit on the DVD.

I have to recreate the error later get post it tomorrow.

You can fit this movie on to one DVD by lowereing the bit rate. The quality may suffer a bit but not too much if the source is good. I just encoded a two hour thirteen minute movie last night and it was fine. I bet an average bitrate of 3750 with a maximum of 9000 will make it fit. Try the bit rate calculator: https://www.videohelp.com/calc

Also check out the forum a www.doom9.org under format conversion and cce.

    Good luck,

    This is so much fun!

and this is totally correct. Your statement I quoted above is completley wrong.

If you want to convert Divx Movies to DVD format, try starting here:

When you have problems or can't understand something, come back and ask specific questions.

  8. I did ask a specific question. I did go to the convert section and did not see anything specific about divx to DVD that is why I posted on the forum. I go the that section first before posting any issue.

The error message states "This is an illegal video file for DVD standard you can only use" Mpge 1 or Mpeg 2". This is the error when I try to burn a divx file using TMPGE.

your last sentence has me confused....you are trying to "burn" a divx file as a dvd??

I wasn't aware TMPMpeg was a burning program, ...are you sure that is program you are attemping to use....maybe it is TMPMpeg DVD Authoring program?

In any event, the poster who postulated it was your audio is most likely correct.

you may want to review your terminology, I think most people here believe "burn" and "encode" are two different operations.

  10. Could be meaning the TMPGEnc DVD Author program vs the Encoding program.

DVD Author only accepts MPG 1 & 2 files for video.

If TMPGEnc for conversion, maybe needs latest Divx codec installed as it converts for me.

Maybe lower the resolution and use the bitrate calculator.

You can as observed get more than 2 hours ona DVD, If you downres to VCD with 48Khz audio, I seem to recall a blank DVD will 6+ hours of vcd quality video. It can look OK depending on the source.

    Cheers

  11. I attempted to use Ulead to burn the divx file to a dvd. File is too big. I then used TMPGE to encode it or compress the size to fit that is when I ran into the error. I question was why TMPGE kept giving this error. Also I do have the current Divx codec drivers in place.

You really need to learn some terminology and some technical info on what DVD is and what divx and avi is before you attempt this stuff. This site has everything you need to know if you can be bothered to read a little.

While Ms. Melanix is taking a few courses in "terminology and technical info", as you suggest, do you think you could see your way clear to pick up few pointers on tact, diplomacy, and common courtesy? Melanix has only been here since June 8. What is your excuse?

Maybe I have been a bit over the top in this case, so perhaps I should apologise to Melaninx. If you look at my posting history here you will see I don't normally sound so agressive, maybe I was just having a bad day, sorry.

However, that still doesn't excuse the fact that, when I suggested looking for a suitable guide, of which there at least 3 on this site, Mealinix claimed to have done so when quite clearly either he/she hadn't bothered or simply had no clue as to what to look for. In my view this means little attempt at researching the subject had bee made and he/she simply wanted the answer on a plate. I am not willing to spoon feed new members who don't/won't try to help themselves and I believe many others here feel the same.

When people show they have tried to find out things and learn I am more than willing to help steer them in the right direction.

i have to say i agree with bugster on this one. how you can say "I did go to the convert section and did not see anything specific about divx to DVD that is why I posted on the forum." which is a complete lie!! the FIRST entry on the page is "How to convert to DVD with TMPGEnc
DivX to DVD." which is exactly what you want!

I agree you must try things first before you ask what the problem is. That way we know what is working correctly and what is not.

    Converting from DivX to MPEG:

In my case I took my original DivX movie (that would be Shawshank Redemption, widescreen) and extracted the audio using "Vitual Dub2" (for file conversion of audio to use on SVCD and DVD) and saved it as a .wav file (16 bit, 48khz etc.). I then launched TMPEnc and on the select "DVD for NTSC 4:3" grey box I selected "CBR MPEG-1 Layer II Audio (MP2). From there I chose my source video file (shawshank redemption.divX.avi) and my newly converted .wav respectively.

    Video type: Non-Interlace
Field order: * Top field first (field A)
    Aspect Ratio: 1:1 (VGA)

    Content of Video: Film Movie

*NOTE: I have no clue what this means, if you do please explain.

I continue on with the bitrate settings, selected output file is c:\shawshank redemption.mpg, encode it and spit it out. I burn it to a blank DVD (using Nero) unfortunately when I play back the finished product on my DVD player the picture is perfect quality but no AUDIO whatsoever. I decide to go back into the "DVD for NTSC" box and select "CBR Linear PCM Audio". But when I burned it again and played it back on my DVD player, this time the video was "freeze framing" every 3 seconds and my audio was way ahead of the video (out of synch obviously). This also happened with another DivX movie "The Fast and The Furious". Can anyone tell me how to tackle this problem? What is the correct way? "Linear PCM Audio" or "MPEG 1 Layer II Audio"? And what is the difference between them. All of my original downloaded movies have great video and audio.

    Thanks in advance,

    Frosty

Did not stay on the humility side for long, did you? I think I really liked you better when you behaved as a an adult, accepted the fact you were a little rash, and apologized. You really showed maturity there. But let one poster tell you he feels the same way, and you slide right back to where you were. Oh well. Anyway, let me be a little more clear about what my "beef" was. I took issue with the way a "guru" attacked "newbie". I really could not care less whether or not Melanix took the time to really look hard to find the answer she needed before posting. I feel one should not question a stranger whether they are "blind, lazy, or just plain stupid". So let me close by saying this: If you, Bugster, Flaninacupboard, or anyone else tries to talk to another poster that way, plan on seeing your post in the Problems section, referenced by this general rules policy:
You agree not to post any abusive, obscene, vulgar, slanderous, hateful, threatening, sexually-orientated or any other material that may violate any applicable laws.

The first step in solving your problem is to post your question in a seperate thread, don't try to take over this one.

Also, please don't bold everything. It's annoying

No one is trying to "take over" anything Sir. I am new to this process, not to mention this site and I have been trying to solve my problem for over a month. All I need is that one final piece to the puzzle and I am done. The LAST thing I need is a sarcastic know it all like you insulting someone new like me. At least I have been trying different things (without success) before even asking a question in this forum.

Why don't you try and help me by encouraging me than being a "jerk" and making me look like I intentionally want to mess up the thread.

Also you didn't have to respond. You could of let someone else help me. As for the bold typing i didn't know it would cause such a stir with you.

Hey man, I wasn't trying to be sarcastic, just trying to point you in the right direction. Take or leave it for what it's worth, but if you practice a little ettiquette your questions will have a better chance of actually getting answered. My comments were a little critical but still pretty mild (I did say please). Like I said, post your own thread, there's lots of people who will be happy to help, including me. Peace brother.

Geez Bugster for someone who obviously has been here for a while whith that many posts, youd reckon he would either be mindful that some people are just learning and even reading items from here still dont understand. They need some help from more experienced people, and with a little guidance can achieve there goals.
The links would help but with a attitude towards noobs, my suggestion to bugster would be if you dont like newbie questions dont answer or dont even look in the newbie area's of the forums.
People may be blind, stupid or lazy but is that any reason to treat them like crap, just think bugster you were blind, stupid, and lazy before your mother guided you from birth to an adult, treat all newbies as they were just born into this generation of the computer age.
With your guidance they too will become a valued member of this forum.
Remember to everyone , treat others the way you would want to be treated.

  23. Hey guys, do me a favour and back off a little.

First, I would like to repeat my apology to the original poster. My response was unneccasrily harsh, again sorry.

To all those having a go at me about it, remember this. No one is perfect and we all have bad days. Read through a few of my posts and you will easily see I don't make a habit of this. However I also believe that when I (or anybody else) post a link and it is so obviously ignored or not read properly, the poster should expect a lttle harshness.

@onlinejames, for someone with so few posts, you seem to have a strong opinion about what is and is not acceptable behaviour here. Well I suppose everyones entitled to their own opinion.

@Tommyknocker, I have already apologised for the way in which I responded, and I have now done it again. That does not mean I accept the response was wrong, just its tone. So get off your high horse and calm down a bit. I am well aware of the forum rules, so go ahead and report me, I am quite happy to accept the decisions of the moderators.
    (are you a mod Tommyknocer?)

  24. Well Bugster i may not have many post here but i am a member of over 20 different forums and the rules and acceptable behaviour are all the same, i am a newbie to this and wouldnt like to be spoken to like that.
Anyways its all over with now, anyways i may need your advice some day
Lets hope you dont have any more bad days
