I want to do very simple cut and paste editing of mpgs. I have QTpro 6. I have figured out I need to demux them, but once done I cant seem to get them into a form I can edit.
I used mpgtxwrap to demux, and got video and audio files called xxxx.m1v and xxxx.m1a. I could play them both but following instructions in the QT help file to paste the audio file onto the video, I could not even select anything to do this.
I tried changing the extensions to .mov and that didn't help. I tried various methods of opening and saving, i.e.. import, export, save as... etc. All of the editing options are grayed out I can't even select all although the selection arrows are under the play-head and I can move them.
I have learned a lot for reading this forum but most of it is over my head. If anyone knows of a good tutorial posted somewhere rather than trying to explain it to me here that would be fine.
Thanks in advance

what sort of "cutting and pasting" are you wanting to do?
Just the ends? like cut out credits?
Portions from the middle and put them together to form one single mpeg file?
more informatoin on what you want to do will make it easier to tell you how to do it!

I want to cut scenes out, re-arange scenes and add scenes from other mpegs.
Thanks for the help -
honestly there are lots of ways to do this....
the easiest for joining/ adding a mpeg file is to just use mpgtx join function, choose the first file and then the second, it will join them to make just one .mpg file so that the the first plays first followed by the 2nd.
If you want to "paste"this into the middle its a little more complicated, since you would have to split the file at the exact moment you want the new file to be added, add it using the join function, then add the last part to your newly joined file.
with mpeg files thats the way I do it
mpgtx give you lots of options
also, some of the older ffmpegx allows you to split by set definations, by the min is perhaps the best one since you can see the min progression in quicktime. Say you want to split it right at the 5min mark, just open up ffmpegx, go to tools, load your mpeg file into the video portion and split with the optoin for typing in yoru min mark.
i dont have it open right in front of me now, nor do i know which of the older versions was the last to let you do it like that
maybe the newest one will, i dont know honestly
i just know you can do what you want, it just may be more difficult depending on what and where you want to edit.
hope this is helpfull -
Thanks Galactica I appreaciate the help and I appoligize for not responding sooner. I had a power surge problem that knocked out my computer. I'm on a spare now waiting to see if the surge protector people come through with the insurance they promise.
I'll try you sugestions, but I'd still like to know why I can't do my editing in QT pro, thats what the pro part is supposed to be, right?
Thanks again,

Its a good question really. I have tried it several times, and any .mpeg2 i open in quicktime pro is a view only file, all the "edit" options are greyed out.
If its not greyed out, then by all means go ahead and edit that way, if you want to maintain the mpeg2 structure you will need to use the quicktime mpeg2 export function that came when you installed dvd studio pro.
I just use the other app because i cant get mpeg2 in quicktime to have any of the edit features avaliable
