I would like to convert an avi to dvd using CCE and I need help writing the avisynth resizing script so that I can maintain the aspect ratio. I'm starting with an oddball resolution of 512x384 and would like to convert to 720x480. Also is there a guide or a nice tool that will easily calculate the borders that I will need in order to convert resolution and still maintain the DAR.
    Thanks in advance,

    VC
    This is so much fun!

  2. Try FitCD http://mitglied.lycos.de/fitcd/
    Go to MPEG RESIZING
Click on button marked source and browse for source
Leave on 1:1 resizing and deselect the PAL box, then check/uncheck anamorphic or not
Move down to crop select from the pulldown menu: Accurate
Move down to destination and select from the pulldown menu: DVD and deselect PAL
Then, select Bicubic Precise from the pulldown menu next to "Avisynth Script"
Finally, click button marked "save script"

512 x 384 has an aspect ratio of 4 x 3, so resize to 640 x 480 to keep the aspect ratio. Then add black borders to get to 720 x 480.

    LanczosResize(640,480)
    addborders(40,0,40,0)

    Regards, Kees Janssen.

I am no means an expert on this so may well be wrong, but think of it like this.

An Avi is intended for PC playback which has square pixels, so 512x384 is 4:3 aspect ratio. A TV does not have square pixels, so resolution and aspect ratio are not necessarily so closley related. The aspect ratio displayed on your TV from the DVD player is determined by the DAR flag in the mpeg stream.

So, if you resize as kees1952 suggested, it will look ok on a PC (if the player ignores the DAR flag like older versions of WMP), but will look squashed horizontally on your TV. So resize to 720*480 and tell CCE to apply a DAR of 4:3 and your TV should display it correctly.

    Hope this helps

Thanks for all of your suggestion guys. Ever since college, I've lost confidence in my math skills and even then I sucked. I especially want to thank abularkin because this progam is awesome.

    Great tip,
