  1. Has any used the ADS Instant DVD 2 capture device yet?

I'm thinking of getting it but I was wondering how much better it
is than the original Instant DVD ver 1 device.

It's been out for a couple of weeks but I haven't seen any feedback
or seen any reviews on it yet.

Supposed to do up to 15MBits!
Wow thats more than you can put on a DVD
and it doesn't make it clar if you're totally locked into mPEG-2 Capture or not
YES BOB its an external device and it handles audio too (dosn't rely on your sound card)

$169 is not the cheapest. I wonder if that would be better than my AVer PCI capture card which requires me to use my sound card for audio?

From experience with USB audio capture
I would say that there are some sytsems that will have a problem with the product..
Its not like FIREWIRE, where we know it'd work!

    Plus the phase "UP TO"
as david pogue observed in the NY TIMES
    is obfuscational market-speak

how many million bits could you actually do?..as long as it does 9MILLION you'll be fine for DVD[/i]

  6. It's an external USB 2 capture device unlike the first
version which was a USB 1.1 device. In theory, there
should be more than enough bandwidth for capturing
    even at DVD bitrates.

If anyone has seen a review on it, it would be great
because I'm ready to purchase based on feedback
from other people who have used it.

I have the USB 1.1 version of the unit (for PC) and it works great. I've also used the Mac version and it has two uses only:

    1. VCD (for which you must use only their propietary software). It will edit the mpeg1 and image the disc. burning must be done with Toast or any other program you have that will burn CDROM-XA tracks.

    2. DVD (again, you must use their software). They support external DVd burners (unlike iDVD) so it's a viable choice. In the case of DVd, they will do the whole thing including the burn.

Nothing capable of being burned to SVCD can be captured using the Mac version and, in fact, updating my PC software from v1.0 to v1.1 produced the same incompatible files as I was getting on my Mac. No SVCD and NERO hated every file I threw at it. I de-installed everything and re-installed the v1.0 software. Now everything captures well and is totally compatible cross-platform.

Based upon my experience, I'd recommend against the USB2 product as it will, undoubtedly, require the new software.
