  1. Hi.

I just downloaded the first part of Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back using Morpheus. It's the version authored by SMR and has all the extended sequences and whatnot.

Well, I'm trying to convert it to mpeg using TMPGEnc so I can burn it to a VCD, and have done so, but about 75% of the way through to converted mpeg there is a pause in the video that wasn't present in the origional DiVX file, and the sound gets about 5 seconds ahead of the video all the way to the end.

Is there something I can do to stop this? Is there another program I can use to convert better?

  2. Baugh.

I tried to use Nero's encoder and it does the same thing, just not quite as bad.

Is there any way to fix it? Is it a bad AVI?

  3. I am also having trouble with that same AVI.
I converted it with TMPG and it plays fine in Mpeg on the PC, but on the DVD player it had lip sync probs.
I then used the encoding feature within Nero and a little past 75% on each disc, the screen locks up and the audio continues. Can't continue past it with video.
The original AVI doesn't have any probs at all.

Who knows....I posted above here asking about the screen lockups but no one's replied. Email me if anyone answers you. I really want this movie.

  4. Yeah I watched it last night and the .avi froze at the planet of the apes part. Did the same thing when I tried to convert it.

  5. That's the spot. But it also froze on Disc 2 at the part where they put VanDerBeak into the security car....
Ok, I'll try a different movie tonight then....I thought it was just my system, but it makes me feel better to see that it is the AVI being circulated...not that it makes me feel good that others have probs, but that misery loves company...heheh

  6. Yeah, it is good to know it's not just me.

Oh well. Atleast I have it at all. Not to shabby for free.

It's not as noticeable on the second part for me, though, because the audio gets ahead right when Joey Lauren Adams has her cameo. And for those who have seen it, you know the rest of the flick is basically Moris Day and the Time's little concert, so it's not that noticeable.

  8. I too had the same problems with the original files (Planet of the Apes scene, Joey Lauren Adams cameo) but was able to convert this film to VCD format. I dont know exactly which step I took that fixed it, so I'll just list them all:

    1. Using VirtualDub, converted the original .avi using the resize filter (for letterboxing) into a new (uncompressed) .avi.
    2. Extracted the audio from the original .avi into a .wav file (again, with VirtualDub)
    3. Put the new .avi and .wav files thru TMPG.

This worked great for me, the audio doesnt get out of sync when the video bites it for a few seconds. I'm no expert, but in my opinion, the critical step listed above was to convert the .avi to uncompressed format (although the file did end up to be about 15 gig....)

    Hope this helps

  9. elmatto,

I'm wondering how this worked for you... on part 1 ther is a big chunk of bad frames (right around the pota part) and when virtual dub tries to do anything with it, it crashes.... I tried the avi defreezer but that froze on me tooo... i guess the only thing to do is to delete the frames... Which version of vdub are you using... that could also be my problem.

in my experience, just about any movie i've d/l from morpheus, whether it be SMR or not amounts to ASS.
why someone would re-encode a video to Divx at 20 FPS (besides to save file size) is beyond me.
Oh dear. This calls for a very special blend of psychology ... and EXTREME VIOLENCE.

  11. I had the same issues in the same places with the video locking up, but eventually, I was able to successfully use TMPGEnc to convert both parts over to MPG. I wish I knew what I did to make the conversion work. I set the output video to NTSC, 29.97 fps, with a constant bitrate of 1150. I also set it to center the video image, and retain the original aspect ratio, since it's widescreen.

The picture and sound on the final VCD (burned with Nero 5.5.4) are great, and it plays on both my PC and my Pioneer DV-333 DVD player, but the weirdest things happen when I play the VCD back. First, if you scan ahead on the disc at all, it loses the sound when you resume normal playback. Second, and truly weird, is that instead of centering the widescreen image, it lays it flush against the top of the screen, leaving one giant black bar to fill the remaining 2/3 beneath it. It's a complete widescreen image, and perfectly watchable, it just sits at the top of the screen instead of the middle.

At least it finally converted, and yes, it will hang for about 3-5 seconds at the infamous points on each part (Dante's head surgery & Dante & Randal coming out of the theater), but the sound continues, and it catches up and finishes.

Has anyone seen the thing with the screen position before? If so, do you know how to fix it? I'd appreciate any help. Thanks!

  12. Problem solved!! From remembering when I did this before, I opened the avi in virtual dub 1.3. I then saved it as a wav file. I used the wav file as the audio source and the avi as the video when converting it to mpg using tmpgenc. Everything worked! It skips at the planet of the apes parts but its no where near as bad as it was before. Try this if you're a View Askew fan.

  13. Guess I spoke too soon. I still have the framing issue, but I also get the audio sync problem when either disc gets to the hanging frame. The video goes out for about 3 seconds, but the audio keeps going, so when the video unlocks, the remaining 3 minutes of each disc plays like a Godzilla movie...at least I'm getting closer each time.

Does anyone know what the best s/w is to edit the mpeg files, so I can try to recut it? I'd appreciate any help. Thanks!

  14. Few more things I might recommend for those who are still having a problem converting this vid. First off, the version of VirtualDub I used to convert this flick was the newest one (1.4.6??? - I dont have it handy right now...) Secondly, something I think might help is when you load the vid into VirtualDub, select the check box for 'show extended options' or something like that...and in the new box, click on 'recalculate keyframes' or the eqivalent. Using these steps, along with the ones I listed in my previous post, should do the trick for you. Hope this helps.

  15. Problem Still Not Solved! I'm an idiot. I used the wav file for the audio source and it actually works on the computer as an mpg. When I burned it on a vcd its all screwed up. The whole movie goes in and out of sync from the audio/video. I still don't know what to do. Anyone?

  16. an easy way round all this is to convert the film into clips using windows movie maker and compile it to windows media file and then convert it to mpeg layer 2 its a slightly long way round of doing it but usually windows movie maker will sort any minor glitches with any avi or any other appropriate file out problem solved
