    Hi all,

What tool would I use to extract an MPEG2 file from the VOB's on a DVD I have burned from my own home movies? That is, without re-encoding the MPEG2 streams. Is there a way to do this? I assume that the VOB's on discs that I create from my own source material are not encrypted. I can get them to my hard drive no problem, but not sure what to do after that.

    Thanks,

    Mike

  2. The simplest way is to rename your VOB file(e.g VTS_01_1.VOB to video.MPG),as long as the audio is MP2.When Windows asks"Are you sure you want to change it?" answer yes.

  3. There is a tool called VOBrater, that can demux any stream from .vobs that are decrypted on your harddrive.
Renaming to .mpg is not a standard conversion method, and will not get past the Content Scrambling System.

Vob's are mpg2 files. TMPEG can demultiplex a vob into it's elementary streams=.m2v(video) and ac3/mp2(audio).
TMPEG's Mpeg Tools can by using simple multiplex convert a vob into mpg without the need to first de-multiplex.

TMPGEnc DVD Author can change any non-copy protected dvd into .mpg files.

No. You cannot do this. The chapter points in the VOBs will cause errors if you try to work with the renamed MPEG2/audio files.

No. They are more than just MPEG2 files with audio attached. Do not try to use TMPGenc to demultiplex them. You will likely have errors at chapter marks.

The proper way to work with a VOB files is to demux the VOB files with VOBedit or VOBrator.

I like to use DVD Decrypter (in IFO mode) to extract the movie/episodes and rejoin the VOBs to make a single VOB per movie or per episode. Then use VOBedit to extract the video and audio files.

The simple renaming MAY work for you, but it is not the proper way, nor will it often give good results. This is similar to renaming DAT files from a VCD and trying to work with the renamed MPEG files. Doesn't work that way. The extra data in the DAT and VOB files (and even the MPEG2 in SVCD) will throw off any work you may try to do with the files.
I'm not online anymore. Ask BALDRICK, LORDSMURF or SATSTORM for help. PM's are ignored.

VOBedit or DVD Decrypter would be my method of choice. Both will join the MPEG across multiple VOBs if there are more than one in the set.

I agree with txpharoah. Although renaming may work in a lot of instances, it is not a good idea.

It is simply twice as big as it needs to be.

  8. I've found that just re-naming files does work. It depends on what software you intend importing the file into. If its DVD Movie factory (which only seems to accept MPEG files) then there is no problem. Also never had a problem with a re-named DAT file, but then again I don't use chapter points in any of my MPEGS.

Heh, I was just looking to do the same exact thing. I want to rip and separate the video and audio so I can convert the audio to AC-3. I've got a bunch of homemade DVD's I've made and found the Mpeg-2 audio is not compatible on my brother's player (an old Sony). Switch to AC-3 seems to be the way to go.

I'll have to give DVD Decrypter a try (I'm most familiar with that one)

    Thanks!

Okay, I've been able to tinker around with DVD Decrypter, but how do you join the m2v files it produces. Nerdboy said it can merge when you demux, but I just keep getting 4 files for 1 movie. In the log it says it's File Splitting = 1GB, is there any way to change that?

Ah, okay. Solved my own problem after reading a bit more on the forum.

    Didn't see Settings under tools.
