I just installed an WD 80gb ide with 8mb cache in my Linux/Samba server. My server has a 100mb ethernet nic.
I tried to capture to the network drive at a 640x480 resolution using Huffyuv compression and VirtualVCR and got alot of dropped frames...at 480x480 the drops were less ....
Anyone here capture to a network drive and what network operating system is the server running ?
I thinking this may only be doable if you capture using mpeg compression...
PS: I'm just starting to get my feet wet in Linux/Samba and this was more of a test then anything else....I do Novell Netware support as a living (and a little NT/2000 server support) and was just currious about all the Linux/Samba talk...I do like what I see...

try picvideo mjpeg @ 19/20 quality, it compresses 3 times better than huffy.
also try divx @ 10000 mbps, it compresses even better.

Never did this before but know a little about networks. One thing is to make sure you are running at 100Mbs, full duplex and using a crossover cable or switch - no hubs. Even still then, not sure whether this can be done successfully as sometimes people have drop frame problems using local drives at 5400 rpm even at 10000 rpm. Throw in the OS networking services and you may have yourself a problem. Though this is only theoretical.
