This is my approach to "doing it all":


1.) Copy vob files from DVD to computer with DVD Decrypter.
2.) Create d2v file from vob files with DVD2AVI, separtes sound file
3.) Use TMPGEnc to make mpg file with the d2v file
4.) Multi-plex files into one MPG file (TMPGEnc)
5.) Use TMPG DVD Author to make menus, ultimately DVD folders
6.) Use IMGTools Classic to make iso image of folders created w/ TMPG DVD Authoring Software
7.) Burn with OEM DVD burning software (Roxio)

Now do I always have to convert to MPG when copying on of my DVDs? If anybody can think of an easier way of doing this w/o converting w/ TMPGEnc it would help. While on the same note, I've tried to use FlaskMPG to do what TMPGEnc does but it still has beta issues. Your responses are appreciated!

Good grief that seems to be so complicated. My system takes a whole 45 minutes and that includes burning with 4x media.

instead of telling him that your system is better, why not tell him what "your system" is.
anyway, you should tryout dvdshrink, thats what i use for my dvds, then there is no need for tmpgenc. and you can just burn the files with nero.

Where did I say my system was better (I don't know that to be true). I did however suggest it was faster. I use DVD2one or DVDshrink, or DVD95, and sometimes DVDX Xpress. When I need to rip I use SmartRipper. For raw speed DVD2one is fast.

I'm one of those that really just want a backup dvd. One that can be played a viewed several times and is of good quality. I don't care if the backup has a menu, or extras (after all it is just a backup). If I want to view the extras in a DVD I can always pull out the original and watch it.

Some prefer to get as close as possible to the original DVD and IMO there is nothing wrong with that but it may involve a very time consuming process to achieve the desired result. I'm too lazy to go through all that.

I use DVDShrink and only do the movie (i.e. re-author) The quality is great and the whole process including the 1x burn on my cheap media is only about 90 minutes.

There really is nothing wrong in your system of doing things. Many people use programs like DVD2ONE or IC7 or DVDShrink but while those are often OK you simply can't beat a true re-encode if done correctly.

IF you havne't tried any of those programs then you might want to give them a try to see if you are happy with the quality. If so then you just saved yourself a lot of time. If not then use your method as is.

As for making an mpeg file ... some authoring programs can accept the M2V type file that TMPGEnc makes and then a seperate audio file (in this case the original AC-3). So you don't always have to multiplex into an mpeg first.

One such program that does this is SpruceUP
It is VERY easy to use and unlike most authoring programs accepts AC-3 audio. Just make sure you name your M2V and AC-3 the same (such as mymovie.m2v and mymovie.ac3) and make sure they are in the same FOLDER on your HDD. This way SpruceUP will have no trouble importing them.

Please note that with your method you should be using AC3Delay to correct the delay value on the original AC-3 to zero (if it isn't already).

I use TMPGEnc but I've never used their authoring program so I cannot comment on it's use but I'd be surprised if it didnt accept seperate files ala SprcueUP.

When I create an image with ImgTools (classic version) I burn it with DVD Decrypter. Just thought I'd let you know that is possible in case you didn't know.
