  1. I need to cut commercials out of mpg2 dvd files (capture from TV). Its easy to do this with virtualdub (using the mod) to but after cutting I can not save again in the original mpg2 format.

So, I am doing this with Tmpgenc, but I need to produce 4 partial outputs to remove 3 commercial intervals and in the end join again, which takes some time. Is there any software that is better to cut these files and get an output without reeencoding?

You can frameserve from Virtual Dub to TMPGEnc after you edit in Virtual Dub.

TMPGenc can cut/join and MPGtx can cut (not sure about join, but never tried).

Begging your pardon TxPharoah(sic), but he said TMPGEnc takes too long.

  5. I have tryed with Virtualdub, frameserving to Tmpgenc. It works, and cutting with virtualdub is quite easy; we can cut several parts of the file and just leave the remaining. But there is a problem: a 1h48m film takes more than 5h30m to be processed.

So, after all it is faster to work with TMpgenc, from which I have to splitt the film into 4 pieces (excluding the commercials) and in the end join again. It needs more manual work but computer processing is faster (less than one hour total).

    IŽll check MPGTx.

What if you have an mpeg2 file that has AC-3 audio. I know TMPGEnc can mux a M2V and AC-3 file into a final mpeg file but when I tried to cut it with TMPGEnc I got video but no audio. So unless I'm missing something the cutting in the MPEG TOOLS section of TMPGEnc does not support AC-3 audio.

I've heard GREAT things about Womble's MPEG2VCR which apparently can do what I want to do (simple cut editing of a mpeg file which was created from a M2V and AC-3 files) but that product is out of my price range (at the moment) so ... do I have any other freeware/shareware options?

Not much choice in that though, with anything that cuts. It takes time.
