I read that DVD writers will only rip dvd's at a max rate of about 2-3x, which is consistant with my experience with my DVD writer.....however DVD-ROM's will rip at around 7-8x which is also consistent with my experience. I beleive it has something to do with protecting the laser in a DVD writer, but not really sure. So basically yes, I believe the speeds you are getting with your writer are the max.....I have checked my DMA settings and they are max, so that does not make a difference.

Samsung DVD-rom..............7-8X average (but it goes as high as 14-15X)
TDK 440N DVD multiformat writer...............4X average (sometimes 6X)
Pioneer 105 DVD writer............................2X -
Most new DVD writers and Roms have thier ripping speed intentionally limited by the manufacturers to try and disuade people from ripping discs. If you want a fast ripper try and get your hands on an old DVD rom before this practice was common-place.
