  1. I seem to have a very unique problem. I have copied my mini DV holiday film to DVD using my camcorder and my Philips DVDR 880 stand alone recorder. (The Philips DVDR records to DVD+R discs). The finalized DVD is perfect and plays on both stand alone and DVD Writer.

However, I have now tried to make a copy of my DVD using my computers Pioneer AO3 writer. (Pioner reads both DVD-R and finalized DVD+R, but only writes to DVD-R) Whilst the computer can see all the files on my holiday DVD, it WILL NOT copy or rip passed the VTS_01_0.BUP file. I can literally copy all .IFO and VOB files to my hard drive by copying and pasting, but not the VTS_BUP file. I have tried 4 diffent rippers too and the Pioneer A03 writer tries and tries to copy this but fails. It rips the 1st few files and stops at the VTS_Bup file. The Pioneer writer will play these discs but I cannot copy or rip from them using the same witer.

I have tried this with 8 discs that I have recorded on my Philips stand alone recored and have the same problem. Yet if I try and copy/rip a DVD that was burnt on my Pioneer AO3 drive, it works fine every time. Can anyone help?? Could it be that the Pioneer can read and rip DVD-R files but only play DVD+R files and not allow ripping? Or could it be that my stand alone philps 880 recorder has something to do with this. Desperate for help. Thanks

The VTS_01_0.BUP is just a back up copy for the VTS_01_0.IFO.

You can make a second copy of the VTS_01_0.IFO, and rename it to VTS_01_0.BUP.

What's the error given by your DVD Ripper?

  3. Thanks for replying. First, the error I get is "Cannot copy Vts_01_0.bup. The system cannot read from the specified device". Yet I can copy all the other .IFO &.Vob files from the same disc??

Secondly, I know the .BUP is supposed to be an exact copy (back-up) of the respective.ifo file. So, in order to make copies of the DVDs recorded on my Philips player, I have even tried copying the .IFO file to hard drive and renaming it to .bup. This works and the file size is identical to the original .bup file. But when I try and burn this using NERO, it seems to identify a problem with the .bup file. I.e., it seems that you cannot just simply copy and rename .ifo files to .bup and expect it to work, Nero seems to identify this as not the original. Whilst it may appear to be an exact copy, burners such as Nero will not allow the burn to occur.

If you can tell me how I can simply copy and rename .ifo to .bup so that it will burn on Nero, it will solve my problem and I would be ever grateful.

Try runing "get vts sectors" if IFO edit. Then save for each IFO, this will create new IFO and BUP files. Nero could complain if your IFO and BUP are different dates.

A couple of other solutions you could try,
Stream rip the vobs to m2v and ac3 then reauthor,
Create new IFOs for the VOB files.
Rip everything in file mode (skip the problem file), then use DVD2One to recreate. It doesn't compress anything under your target size.

  5. Thanks, I'll try this but first will see if there is another burner, other than Nero, that will allow me to simply copy and rename .ifo to .bup. It would require far less time on my part. Thanks again.

  6. I have the A04 + the 880. I hate the 880 menu so what I do is rip IFO + Vobs. Then in IFOedit create new IFOs. Transfer Vobs over to that folder then Get VTS sectors. It works a treat and only takes about 30mins. I use TMPGEnc DVD Author to creat menus. It's a very simple program with excellent results and you can actually re-edit your DVD.

  8. I have the same problem. I have copied a lot of my videos to DVD+R using the Philips DVDR 880. They play fine on at least 3 stand-alone players and also on my PC with WinDVD. A few days ago I wanted to make a backup and Windows Explorer could not read the files on the DVD+R. So I tried DVDDecrypter. It could not read the VTS_01_0.BUP file. SmartRipper brought my Windows session to a stop. Then I copied all the files to my harddisc except for the BUP file and copied and renamed the IFO file to BUP. Should have worked because BUP is just the backup for the IFO file. But when I tried to burn a new DVD with Nero I got an error message. So I used IfoEdit to make new IFO files but Nero still balked. Finally I used Nero to make a data DVD with the two folders VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS. This time I got a DVD that played on my computer with WinDVD but when I put it into a stand-alone player it did not play. So I thought I was smart and ripped the new DVD with DVDDecrypter. This worked fine but when I wanted to burn the newly ripped files Nero gave an error message. I burned the DVD all the same and put it in my player. This time I could see a garbled picture on the TV. Then I contacted Philips but up to now I have not received an answer.
Oh, I forgot: Ripping in ISO mode with DVDDecrypter starts fine but there always is a problem with one of the last sectors of the DVD, so you get no ISO image.
By the way, when I record to a DVD+RW on the Philips, it also plays everywhere AND I can make a copy on my PC, backup the copy and so on. So that is my solution for the future but I would be extremely grateful if anybody comes up with an idea how I can backup the DVD+Rs that I have written so far.

simple answer ...... move the VTS_01_0.ifo to a new folder, open ifoedit, open the VTS_01_0.ifo from the new folder select save and save it to the original folder, you will be asked if you want to save it to .bup as well, click yes. ...... Do this also for the VIDEO_TS.ifo and all .ifo and .bup files will now have the same "created on" dates and nero should burn them.

  10. Thanks for the advice, unfortunately it doesn't work. I created the new IFO and BUP files with IfoEdit in the way you suggested, the creation date and time showed that I had indeed the new files in the directory but Nero stil said "file reallocation failed". I burned the DVD all the same and neither WinDVD nor a stand-alone player could read it, not even the Philips where the original files came from. I hate to say this, but is it possible that Philips has found the ultimate copy protection for DVDs and doesn't know it. Looks perfect to me: the DVD plays on all DVD-players and when you try to copy it: hasta la vista baby.
So my question still stands: has anyone found a way to copy a DVD+R created by a Philips stand-alone DVD-recorder?
