THEN re-encode?? -
I always re-encode, and drop all special features to minimum quality. Ditch any foreign audio tracks and you can usually still get a very good quality main movie.

Re-encoding is NOT always necessary.
The aim is to get a DVD9 movie on a DVD5 disc. If you want to include all the menus, extras, additional audio tracks, etc...then there's no getting around re-encoding.
If you're just interested in the main movie, without menus, etc...you MIGHT be fortunate enough to fit the main movie on the disc WITHOUT re-encoding (as long as the total size of the files is less than 4,489 MB), this is where you would use the 'RE-AUTHOR' option.
If after stripping the DVD9 from all additional crap, the file of the main movie is still too big to fit on a DVD5, you can SPLIT the movie (without re-encoding) to fit on 2 DVD5's (while keeping the original quality), or RE-ENCODE (and losing some quality).
So.....SIZE DOES MATTER ! :P
Hope this helps.

True. Personally I like to keep the menus though, and am willing to sacrifice a small amount of pic quality to do this. As I said all extras are already compressed as much as possible so I usually get away with a level 3 at worst.
Remember though that my backups are the ones that get used, the originals are kept safe. Not all, just the ones we tend to watch while wasted. I still keep the originals safe so if anything happens to my copies I have a perfect source to get them back. Since these are more stoner films, we can never tell at a small loss in quality cos we're wasted! If your backing up to actually keep as the backup, then try to keep full quality.
