  1. Hello all,

I want to make an attempt at converting my film based home movies to DVD. I want to know if there are any tutorials out there that cover this. I have a good working projector and Canon GL2 DV Camcorder.

Any and all help would be appreciated.

    Thanks,

  2. I asked this question a couple of months ago, and the best answer anyone could give me was to play the movie on the projector, and record it with the digital camera. Maybe you'll get some different responses, but that seemed to be the consensus when I asked.

Your main problem is getting them converted over to digital format. There are outfits that do this kind of thing all the time - do a YAHOO "yellow pages" search in your area for FILM TRANSFERS. Once you have it in electronic format, run it through a MPEG2 encoder, then author and burn.

The film transfers will be much higher quality that your projector/camcorder approach.

  4. There is an opticle device you will need. Works like a screen but better than projecting onto a screen. Check the guid list on the main page. They just put up a link to tomshardware that covers film also.

  5. Interesting, because i just finished capturing a project for someone who already recorded there 8mm film to VHS and then wanted me to convert it to DVD.

It looks like crap but what can you do.

Im interested to see how it turns out on DVD.

(5 hour capture so theres goin to be lots of editing)

Its too late now to convert it the better way.

Take a look at the newly-posted guide from Toms Hardware--it's really pretty good. It also discusses some of the filtering techniques available in Vdub specifically designed for 8mm film transfers. I transferred 10 400' reels last fall. It is a REAL pain. I've just applied the Hotspot filter to these--it really makes a big improvement. Also I found that an older analog camcorder (Sony TR81-Hi8) worked a lot better than my newer digital camcorder (Sony TRV-30). I read an article some time ago in Camcorder magazine that also recommended use of an analog camcorder for capture. I've been thinking of putting together a guide based on my experiences, but just haven't gotten around to it.
