I've already spent a few hours editing my video (AVI) in ArcSoft Showbiz, but I'd like to try TMPGen for encoding ...

Is there any way I can retain the editing I've done in Showbiz, but use TMPGen to do the MPEG encoding?

It appears that Showbiz does not actually alter the source AVI when I do my splice editing... but instead it just keeps track of my start & stop points in a much smaller project file.

I've already test burned a few DVD+RWs with the Showbiz tools, but the encoded just doesn't seem crisp enough when viewed on my TV... Thus after looking at the encoder comparisons I'd like to try TMPGen.

    Thanks, Dave

Save your edited movie as a DV AVI then encode it with TMPGEnc.

Cool 8) , I found the save as "DV File" option after clicking the "Make Movie" button.

Now, assuming I use TMPGenEnc from that file, and TMPGen creates an "M2V" file... which program can I use to burn the M2V file to DVD. What is the best practice here

    Thanks, Dave

Forgot to mention that you will need a DV codec installed for TMPGEnc to encode. I use the Panasonic DV codec which can be found in the tools section.

You can make a compliant DVD Mpeg file and use any authoring program such as Ulead MF2 or DVDlab to make the vob files and burn with Nero.

  9. I was also not satisfied with the results after editing and encoding to mpg2 in Showbiz. I tried the "make movie" button and saved a 1 minute 20 second clip to uncompressed AVI. The resulting file size was tremendous, over 2 gig.

I now perform my capture, editing and saving to AVI using Windows Movie Maker 2. If you are an XP user it is free, and I find it functionally equal or better than showbiz. For example, it is easier to remove sections from the middle of a clip using WMM2.

After saving the AVI, I use TMPGenc to produce the MPEG2, using 2 pass variable bit encoding. I find the results quite satisfactory and the MPEG2 files are relatively compact.

Thanks, I do have Win XP Pro.. so I'll give that a try.

What program do you use then to burn the MP2 files to DVD?

  11. To author DVD's, I use Sonic's MyDVD 4.0 that came bundled with my burner. It is simple to use but with almost no options to change the look and feel of the DVD menus. There is also a conflict with Roxio Easy CD that requires me to kill the "DirectCD.exe" process everytime I want to burn a DVD. I am certain there are better authoring programs out there; you may want to check the DVD authoring forum.

My PC came with WMM version 1. Version 2 is downloadable from the microsoft site, as well as add-ons or patches with addition video, titles and transition effects.
