There are 2 shareware programs which are faster than tmpgenc and virtualdub...

For mpgs try MPG Joiner. For avi's try Peck's Power Join

    MP3Nut,
Just another avenue to try. Although these are not capable of splitting at the frame level but if your intent was to just get a specific file size you could try any number of "file splitters". Try a google search and you will get many numbers of them.
These will split a file at a specific size limit right to the byte in some cases. In theory this should not create any sync issues with the split files.
In contrast, it has been noted in this forum many times about file splitting mpeg2 files with tmpgenc and the audio / video remaining in sync for the second portion of the split file.
Just another avenue, depending upon your needs.

  6. ED,
specifically, i am trying to break up DVD rips. i am ripping dvd's into mpegs, but with the program i use, it makes large files and does not give you the option to break the mpegs up by dvd chapter. i have dvdx copy plus too (which splits for you), but it shuts down on me all of the time and gives me errors

ps, it needs to do a good job too, i want the files to split smoothly

    mp3nut,
I understand. I was only offering up a very quick and cheap alternative if all you were after was file size. But it seems that you want to actually split the internal mpeg along picture lines (i.e., chapters).
Then, I would suggest what the others have mentioned. Each comes with its own set of problems but they all can be worked around. It depends on your frustration level and amount of free time to invest.
