Nightscape,
I have used the Xvid codec available from this site for months with no problems at all.
However, should you wish to run it through TMPGEnc, you'll need to set a few options up. Here's a guide on this site that will help you to do this:

Enjoy.

Can it be installed alongside older DivX codecs like 4.11? Also, I heard that the later V5.x codecs might possibly contain spyware/adware, any truth to the rumours?

If you choose not to purchase DivxPro 5x, then it indeed has adware in it, but it comes with full functionality. If you purchase it though, it comes adware free.

To answer your other question, yes, you can install it next to the others. Make sure you install them in order (i.e V3, V4, and then V5) for the DivX codecs. XviD can be installed along side all of these without issue. It will produce equivelent, or better quality than the DivX codec, and it's freeware.
Impossible to see the future is. The Dark Side clouds everything...
