  1. Hey-

I've been downloading MPEG2's from the Prelinger Archive @ Archive.org and have been somewhat succesful in burning these as data CD's and DVD's and playing them in my Apex AD-1600, without any decoding, recoding, demuxing etc.

I say somewhat because half or more of the ones I've downloaded show up squeezed into one half of the screen. They seem to come in two dimensions-the ones that are 480 x 360 seem to always work correctly, unfortunately most of them are 360 x 240 and these seem to be hit or miss whether they'll show up full screen or half screen.

Any ideas on why this happens and what i might do about it would be greatly appreciated and if you haven't checked out the Prelinger Archive you are missing out.

You can split mpeg2 files using this program

by host i just mean some manner of letting me download the portion you host.

the app will let you split by file size, i believe you just type in [-20M] to get the first 20megs or [20M-] for the last. it will tell you how to do it in the example bar.

or you can split it by number, 700 meg mpeg split 30 times will give you 23.3 meg chunks. just hit stop after a few seconds so you dont actually get all 30!

pick one and let me know how i can download it.
ill try it on my end and let you know what i find.

Also, how are you buring these.

SVCD? I checked your player, it cant handle whats called XSVCD, so if your pushing the standard SVCD rate of 2500k/sec that could be why.

Generally speaking the resolution of SVCD are as follows
    PAL 480 x 576
    NTSC FILM 480x480
    (read more here: https://www.videohelp.com/svcd )

since your mpeg files that are 480x360 are working and the ones that are 360x240 are a hit or miss makes me believe it could be the resolution causing the problem

How are you burning these as SVCD?

When you tried them as DVD how did you convert them?
Whats the audio frequency? 48khz - DVD standard? Some players cannot playback the file properly if its not at 48khz, but that usually has no effect on the video.

Ill wiat for your link on where to download the test and see what happens on my end

  6. This is the cool thing (for me) about the way I'm doing it.
If you take MPEG2 files, change the extension to .mpg if it isn't already and burn them as a straight data cd-SVCD (some anyway) players will automatically do the de-coding for you and play it as though it was a VCD (but with MPEG2 quality). This also works for straight data only DVD's.
I have done no encoding, re-encoding, authoring or anything like that-and have never done so, this is all new to me.I'll find one to post for you and let you know the url when i get it uploaded.Thanks-

    1. What type of dvd player do you have? Not all can do this!
    2. The hard part about this is most SVCD mpg files are well over 700 megs, thus you cant just do a straight data cd-SVCD.

If the mpg is less than 700 megs and your player supports direct data mpg playback, yes its an option. Not all do however!

This actually does work on DVD's as well.It reads them the same way.But I still have that half screen problem.Any ideas about how I can resize them?

Galactica-Did you check that file I uploaded for you? http://www.spikepriggen.com/Mpeg2/BongoBoa1950.mpg
you were gonna download it and check it out.

If you take a look at this whole thread you can probably get a better idea of my situation-seems from some of your questions like you're seeing only the last entry and replying on the basis of that.

Thanks for you advice-Hope you got some more for me

    Thanks-Spike

1st: I generally make an effort to read every post, sometimes forgetting words or key points in the 1st posts. I did see you say data cd and dvd, my assumption was data cd and DVD not data cd and data dvd.
I glossed over your model player when replying again, I apologize for that.

Important thing to note is that NOT EVERYONE CAN DO THIS! You are lucky, your player will support data mpeg burns to either cd or dvd and will play them back fine. Some do not. Since others read this forum i just want to make that fact known.

    2. I did download the mpeg file. It plays back fine on ever player I have on my mac. I dont have the time at the moment to burn it to a cd-rw, nor to convert it to dvd like I normally would to test it out. when I do, ill post my remarks.

    Thanks for hosting it.

  10. Thanks alot Galactica-I really appreciate your help.

I would eventually like to burn real (not data) DVD's of these-do you have an FAQ you can point me to to get me from the file I hosted to a dvd?

    Thanks again-

these mpeg files are essentially ready to follow this procedure, you can just skip the extract mpeg from .bin part.

One thing, i have not had time to do anything other than just play them.
I suggest you download MPEGINFO from versiontracker, and get info on these mpeg files.

Things to note are if they are in fact MPEG2
the audio k/sec and the frequency of the audio

Most players require the audio to be at 48khz, and as you will see in the tutorial it explains how to correct the audio if the audio is not already at 48khz

    its a rather simple process.

NOTE a new version of ffmpegx has come out since my creating the tutorial

the tools tab now looks different. Both of the browse options will work for either audio or video Just select the video as the top one, audio as the bottom one.

NOTE no more GO button, just click demux and it will start demuxing and switch to DVD for the mux as, then click MUX as and it will start the muxing

everything else is essentially the same.
