  1. The DVD I am trying to back up is The Animatrix. The first problem I encountered is that DVDBackup and OSEX would error out when trying to pull the files from the DVD. I finally got OSEX to work by creating a disc image instead of folders.

I mounted the disc image and started up DTOX and proceeded to crush the contents using the disk copy option. Everything seemed fine, but when dtox was done I got a message that said "For full diskcopy you need to copy all files from the dvd in file mode" It did make a folder with some of the files from the disk that was 4.3 GB.

I also tried using DVDBackup to pull the files from the mounted disc image I created with OSEX. But when I selected the newly extracted files and ran DTOX I got the same result.

I wanted to know if anyone tried backing up this disk and if they were succesful. Also I was wondering if there was something else I could try.

    Thanks in advance.

The dvd was just released. Have not had a chance to buy it!

But, you said it works making a 4.3 gig video_ts folder. Open up your APPLE DVD PLAYER, go to FILE, then OPEN and choose the video_ts folder.

Then push play, if it plays back fine, dont worry about the error and proceed to burn.

As for the backup errors, since the dvd is essentially new on the scene we will have to wait to see if others have same problem. One solution, if you can, is to boot into os9 and use the os9 dvd backup program (blanking on the name at the moment) and try the backup in 9.

    Maybe it will work.

You could also use OSeX again on the mounted disk image and this time do DVD FOLDER. Likewise, use DVDbackup on the mounted dvd image and back them up. Perhaps since you got to dvd image with no problems, the backup will work fine now. Just a thought.

  4. Thanks for the quick reply.

I tried to play the 4.3 GB folder that was created with APPLE DVD PLAYER but it could not find a valid media file.

I was able to use DVDBACKUP on the mounted image but I got the same error as before. Though I can play the extracted files from DVDBackup with APPLE DVD PLAYER. When I tried to use OSEX on the mounted image I got the following error..

    osex thread_discformat::dvdx:mkdir()

    FWIW:
It's my understanding that the DVD of the original "The Matrix" was very complex for its time and caused all sorts of problems when it was released with all but the most modern stand-alone players. I wouldn't be a bit surprised if the structure of "The Animatrix" is pushing the envelope also, especially in regards to back-ups.

Can you copy and paste the contents of your 4.3gb video_ts folder into here.

Generally you get that information when you are missing the small .ifo and .bup files
Id like to see what DTOX made, if you dont mind.

Ok. I have a feeling you are missing a small file that may be causing it not to be recognized as a proper video_ts folder. cant find out until i see whats in the folder you have.

  9. galactica here are the contents of the VIDEO_TS folder DTOX made...

    VIDEO_TS.VOB
    VTS_01_0.BUP
    VTS_01_0.IFO
    VTS_01_0.VOB
    VTS_01_1.VOB
    VTS_01_2.VOB
    VTS_01_3.VOB
    VTS_02_0.VOB
    VTS_02_1.VOB
    VTS_02_2.VOB

Here are the contents of the original VIDEO_TS folder...

    VIDEO_TS.BUP
    VIDEO_TS.IFO
    VIDEO_TS.VOB
    VTS_01_0.BUP
    VTS_01_0.IFO
    VTS_01_0.VOB
    VTS_01_1.VOB
    VTS_01_2.VOB
    VTS_01_3.VOB
    VTS_01_4.VOB
    VTS_01_5.VOB
    VTS_01_6.VOB
    VTS_02_0.BUP
    VTS_02_0.IFO
    VTS_02_0.VOB
    VTS_02_1.VOB
    VTS_02_2.VOB
    VTS_02_3.VOB

As you can see many files are not present in the DTOX VIDEO_TS folder. I can play the DTOX files in VLC and it looks like all of the episodes are there. Obvioulsy though I am unable to use the menu since VLC does not give me the option to use the menu when opening files.

  10. I finally got APPLE DVD PLAYER to recognize the DTOX VIDEO_TS folder by copying the following files into it...

    VIDEO_TS.BUP
    VIDEO_TS.IFO
    VTS_01_0.IFO
    VTS_02_0.BUP
    VTS_02_0.IFO

Everything seems to be ok when I run it in APPLE DVD PLAYER. The menu works fine and everything seems to be there (subtitles, languages, and scenes).

    Yep! just as i thought!
your missing the VIDEO_TS.BUP and VIDEO_TS.IFO files.
Likewise for some reason only teh 01.ifo and .bup were made!

Thus apple dvd player cant see them as a standard dvd folder.

Your solution was exactly what i was going to tell you to do!

I had the same problem dvdbackup wouldnt image the movie to my harddrive without an error.

When you tried to process the video ts folder in dtox it wouldnt work.

So as Galactica and Temj suggested I made a disk image I used DVDextractor in OS9 and made a decrypted image.

Then I mounted the image in OS X using toast

Then I used dtox on the mounted video ts folder and it worked fine

    Thanks galactica and temj

I've been working on this all day (I'm stuck inside because of the hurricane, so I have nothing better to do!)

I have the same problems as noted in this thread and others - I am completely unable to get DVD Backup to work of the original Animatrix DVD. I don't know what's different with the setup other folks have who were able to easily get a clean DVD Backup and copy, because it definitely won't work for me.

I finally got an image of the DVD via OSeX which DVD Backup could extract all files. The VIDEO_TS folder created by DVD Backup works fine with Apple DVD Player.

As noted above, DVD2oneX gets 99.99% of the way through a "Disc Copy" backup, then errors out with a "For full diskcopy you need to copy all files from the dvd in file mode" message.

Also as noted above, Apple DVD player won't recognize the resulting VIDEO_TS folder until the above listed "missing" files are copied into it. But I don't get a working copy when I do so, regardless if I copy the missing files from the the DVD Backup VIDEO_TS folder or the original DVD's VIDEO_TS folder.

What I *DO* get when attempting to play the VIDEO_TS folder created by DVD Backup and having the above-listed files copied into it is the "blue sky and clouds" United Artist logo clip, the Roadshow Pictures logo clip, then about five minutes of what I'm guessing are warnings of some sort in a dozen languages.

No intro, no menus, no navigation of any sort.

Any clues as to what I can do to fix this would be very welcome.

Try the OS9 app dvdextractor and see what results you get with that.

  15. When you run DVD Backup, are leaving the box checked to change the region code to 0? Virtually every problem disc I've had did the same thing until you uncheck the box and leave it as whatever region it was. Also a critical part of DVD Backup is letting the disc run for a few minutes to "validate" the disc, on some discs, just getting to the main menu screen is enough, others need to play several minutes of the feature to work, so as a rule, just hit play on the movie and let it run for 5 minutes or so, then go to DVD Backup! I've also found any errors in DVD backup, means that going to DTOX next is a surefire mess.....I'll borrow a friend of mine's copy of it and see what I can do...

I tried that yesterday, several times, and the application won't work. I get a "not enough space on the destination drive" error.

I have over 70 gigs free on the drive that I'm trying to save to. I'm guessing the application doesn't like either large drives or, knowing some installers don't work properly with over 1 gig of memory, perhaps this application has the same issues.

I'm rummaging through the closet to see if I can find an old SCSI drive which is only about 18 gigs. And I suppose I could remove half my RAM and try that also. But a work-around that doesn't require that would certainly be easier!

I'm most confused by the folks who say DVD Backup 1.3 worked just fine for them, no copying of files required.

I just checked, and you are correct that my DVD Backup is NOT set that way -- it is set to "change to region free". Clearly I don't need that option and I look forward to trying again with that option disabled.

Yes, I have done that -- good advice I learned here previously and worth repeating. Actually, since I've run across a few discs that used more than one decryption key during the course of the disc, I usually play the entire disc through (letting it run while I'm not at the computer), or if I'm in a hurry, just skip up to each chapter beginning and letting it run for a few seconds.

I'm now going to try disabling the "change region" feature and see if that works.

Sorry I didn't report back -- I've been playing Mr. Chainsaw Man since Isabelle came through.

It came out better, but still not complete. I got a "could not decrypt main title" error, which was a .VOB file that was 144k in size.

Probably just something wonky with my setup, since you and other folks didn't have a problem.
