I don't know if anyone else here uses canopus procoder but if you do maybe you can help me. I am trying to convert an avi to a dvd mpeg stream. Everything appears to be just fine but after a couple of minutes of encoding my system reboots with no errors and no warnings. I am running Windows XP Pro with SP1 installed. Any ideas?

Well procoder is pretty CPU intensive. When I use it, it runs at 100% throughout the entire process. Are you sure your pc is adequately cooled and otherwise stable? Try installing a system monitor which detects heat and watch it during the encoding. You may just be overheating.
Procoder should work fine under XP, but when these types of problems arise its always a good idea to try running the program in compatibility mode. Right click on the executable and go to the compatibility tab and try running it in 2k mode.
Also, is this a compressed avi such as divx? You may have some corrupt frames, which is actually extremely common. When an encoder finds a corrupt frame it usually just crashes the program, but its possible it could completely crash the pc too. Look in the tools section and there are some programs for fixing/removing bad frames. -
Hi tommcd64,
According to your disctription of problem your AMD PCmight getting
over heated due to this your system get reboots. This problem is not
comming from procoder.
Actually during encoding time your whole system really working hardto its peakperformence so that your file conversion
completed as early.
Also check your PC's Internal & External Power Wiring for any kind of loosen connections.
Bye, have safe computing.JUST EDIT & PLAY.................apnait.com -
I will check the avi again for corrupt frames. I checked it with virtualdub but it didn't find any bad frames. The systems is very well cooled. I just upgraded and got a Barton 2800 and 1024MB of DDR 333 memory with copper heat spreaders. The cpu runs at 105F while encoding and the system runs at 100F while encoding. It runs cooler when idling. I can use mainconcept encoder and do a movie without any reboots but it doesn't do the aspect ratio very well.

Hi Tom,
For what its worth I will add my experience.
I have a similar system to you running XP professional. funny thing is that I have been running XP professional for about 2 years now without a rebuild, and running Procoder for the last few months without any problem, yet last week I bought a new hard drive and thought it was high time for a fresh instal of XP.
Procoder worked fine for the first few encodes, but then it just started crashing, exactly as you described. sometimes locking up computer totally, sometimes restarting spontaniously etc. I tryied uninstalling all the drivers and aplications since the day before, even tried rolling back XP....I tried everything, it still locks up randomly during the encode process. I tried win 2K compatibility mode....no differance. But I just tried win 98 compatibility mode and it seems to work.....fingers crossed.
This was esentially the last ditch before I rebuilt the system again, but it is frustrating not to be able to fix the problem because there is nothing to stop it happening again. The only new thing I added to my system (that I bought at the same time as the new drive) was a winfast delux TV card (which I tried physically removing)....
Anyways if win98 compatibility mode works I am happy....
