  1. Hi,
I am getting one of these drives today as it has been delievered this morning. I was wondering if anyone else has one of these? I have been checking out the media section and trying to work out what media to buy? I take it the reviews regarding the Sony 500 drive apply to the new 510 drive? Any help on this matter would be great. Thanks for your time.

  2. My Sony works well with the cheap Ritek media and I have also burned CompUSA brand and TDK, Memorex, and Phillips. In fact I have yet to run across any media that didn't work and that includes both DVD-R and DVD+R.

  4. I think it has been delivered this morning. I recieved the invoice from dabs.com yesterday at 8 am so they would have shipped it the same day and it should be at my house by now the trouble is i am work until 4 pm so i can't get my hands on the little beauty. I orginally ordered the sony 500 model from dabs.com at the start of march and then they could supply the 500 so I got ungraded to the 510 for no extra cost. I hope it is ok I have just been trying to figure out what media will work with this bad boy as it seems no one on this forum has the 510 only the 500 model. I will report tomorrow how it all went but I can;t see there being a problem. I don't think you get any blank dvd media in the retail box so that could be a problem. I will just have to wait and see what happens. I have also ordered a sample pack of dvd-rs from CD-RMedia.co.uk so this should try and sort out what media i will get in the future.

you got an upgrade from the dru-500a to the dru-510a at no extra cost

I dont know where in the world you are but here in australia the dru-500a was selling for $680 inc tax (dealer price) and when the dru-510a was released it started selling at $514 inc tax

you should check the prices out sounds like you may have been ripped off.

My local Best Buy is already stocking the 510 and it is the same price as the 500.

The price is 349$ for either one, they are carrying both of them right now.

  9. I am from the UK and the 500 was £246.75 inc VAT when I ordered it about 3 months ago. The 510 is now listed at £269.07 inc VAT. This is taken from Dabs.com. I think that is a pretty good deal that I got the better drive for the same price as the 500. Seeing as I had been waiting for the 500 for 3 months then Dabs told me that Sony wouldn't be making them anymore or something and I couldn't get one of the 500s.

I've had the 500AX for several months now. I live in the USA, and I've had extremely good luck with Verbatim Datalife Plus +R 2.4X and 4X media from Best Buy and TDK 4X from Circuit City (I haven't tried Best Buy's TDK 4X yet, but I assume they're the same.). These have the lowest parity error rates as reported by Kprobe and are very consistent. At under $2/disk these are cheap enough for me not to bother trying noname stuff until the online prices start collapsing.

The worst discs I've tried have been the Maxell 2X -R's from Meritline. These have had all sorts of errors and skipping problems. I tried to give them away to a friend of mine who has a Pioneer A04 and he said no thanks, he had just thrown away a bunch of them himself, as had a friend of his. So stay away from those. I haven't tried Riteks, but I've heard that the Sony has problems burning the G03's at 2X with the latest firmware. But otherwise they're supposed to be okay, if you can stand 1X burning.

What is the difference between the DRU-500a and DRU-510a? I've flashed my DRU-500a from 1.0d to 1.0f and then to 2.0f, which I understand basicly makes it a DRU-500ax.

  12. ok, i just got this burner a couple of days ago, its my first dvd burner. I am having some trouble with it, whenever i put in a blank dvd, musicmatch opens it like its an audio cd, and when i look at the drive in the explorer it says the blank dvd is full and only holds 1.9 gigs??

Same problem for me. Windows Media Player opens when I insert a blank DVD-R or DVD+RW. Don't worry cos I have burnt onto a DVD-R and DVD+RW and they work fine. I had burnt around 2.5 Gb of Data onto the DVD+RW so it should be fine regardless of it saying 1.9Gb or what ever.

amendsen83 have you tried to make a DVD-Video disk with teh MyDVD program shipped with the drive? I have tried putting 4 VCD standard MPGs into a project and the thing crashes my computer.
