I just ordered my FIRST (!) camcorder!

I want to transfer my home movies to DVD, and as far as I can tell, I guess I need a firewire card. Which model will give me the best quality? Do I need a whole new video card, or is that unrelated?

    Thanks for any info!

  2. it doesn't matter what firewire card u buy...i bought a noname one and had no problems what so ever...about your video-card...do u mean graphics card or some form of video editing card....what u definitly need is a fast processor, lots of RAM and a big HDD.....the movie files wont be small when u capture them uncompressed...you will also need software to capture it and software to burn it to DVD with maybe some funky menus....this will cost you money....

I purchased a DV starter pack which featured a firewire card with three ports, and Ulead videostudio5. It has worked pretty well in the 6 months I have had it. If you don't need the software then most cards seem ok- you can get combination cards with firewire and usb2 ports, which might be handy for printers etc. I am going to have to add a new HD to the computer soon so i am thinking of getting a external drive connected through firewire. Whichever way you go, you won't be disappointed.

  4. newegg.com search for firewire get the $18 one. I've ordered 4 of them and had no problems I think it's GWC or something like that. Just use Texas Instruments OHCI 1394 driver for windows 2000 for your driver selection if your using wins 2000 that is. It has 3 ports.

Thanks for all the info, guys.

I have a plenty fast machine, the necessary software, and probably will need another hard drive, but I was most concerned about the firewire card, since that's new to me.

    Appreciate the info.
