Maybe this is a lame question, but I have been trying to figure it out, but i haven't succeeded in 100%, so I am asking here, perhaps someone know this better than me, and would like to share the knowledge. I have a AVI file that have the resolution 640x360, and I wanted to convert it to a anamophic VCD... i tried to use the 16:9 Display in TMPEG.. and 16:9 525 Line... and its in NTSC Film btw.. with 352x240.. but it doesn't look real somehow.. the picture is still stretched and everyone seems like they could fit in the NBA..
So i wonder if I could use the exact resolution in pixels, and not using the 16:9 dispplay and 525 Line thingie.. But what resolution does NTSC anamorphic have.. if there is a certain resolution for it.. Im trying to convert some Stargate episodes, which seems to be filmed in 2:35.1.. but in other hand, that seems a bit strange since its a TV show.. hmmm.. Oh well, i hope someone here can help me with my little dilemma..

You can encode to 16:9 aspect ratio, but I'm sure you wont find a player / TV, that plays an anamorphic encoded VCD on a 4:3 TV properly. Maybe it is a limitation of the format Video-CD at all.

You're confusing resolution with DAR (displayed aspect ratio) they are not the same thing. The DAR for your PC monitor is 1:1, for TV it's 4:3, and for movies it's 16:9. In order to display a movie (16:9) on a TV (4:3) you have to letter box it.
However, this can be done at any (well in theory) resolution.

Ok, next point. The NTSC TV display is 720x480 29.97fps. Movies are shot at 23.976fps. You said you're using the NTSC_film template, only use this if your source is 23.976fps, other wise use the standard NTSC template (ie. 29.97fps source).
Although you can have any DAR at any resolution, once you captured the file you've sort of 'locked in' the DAR. That is it's part of the picture, so any resizing will affect the look.
I don't know how you captured the source. Did you capture a letterbox source, or is your capture full screen? If you capture is already letterboxed you've got a problems. If it's full screen you've got two choices.
1) Choose center instead to full screen in TMPGenc, this will center the 640x360 MPEG on the 720x480 TV. That would mean black lines around the entire picture.
2) Try making an avisynth file with:
AVISource("filename"
BicubicResize(480,360)
AddBorders(0,60,0,60)
This will give you a 480x480 MPEG with a 'the apperance' of a 16:9 DAR. Load the AVS file in TMPGenc, if you're doing VCD use the unlock template to make an xVCD at 480x480 instead of 352x240. Or change the resolution/boarders of your AVS file. -
Hmm... it seems like its a little difficult.. well, the file i downloaded is letterboxed, and when I right click on avi and look at its properties and it says frame width 640 and frame height 360. Maybe its not possible to make it anamorphic.. i have a 16:9 TV, thats why i wanted to make an anamorphic vcd of my stargate episodes..
One more question, is it possible to convert 23.976 fps to 25.. cus 23.976 will be it bit jerky when played in my stand alone player.. 25 works fine.. but i guess converting the fps can make the output file unsynced, so perhaps that is not recommended to do.. -

If you've got a 16:9 TV then there should be a feature on it somewhere that will squash the image to 16:9 for you. The DVD player will always output a VCD at 4:3 because there is no anamorphic 16:9 standard for VCD only for DVD. But if your TV can squash it then it's irrelevant anyway the effect will be an 'anamorphic' VCD! It appears that what you did in the first place was similar to the method I used ona few DVD's and it works fine for me. -
Yes, it won't be true anamorphic.. only simulated.. but that would work when I have a 16:9 TV and i turn on the Wide mode.. then it squeeses everything.. but i have tried that, and still the picture is stretched.. I mean, after I converted with 16:9 Display and 16:9 525 Line.. i think the picture got a little too stretched so the Wide mode didn't work 100%.. thats why I want to have an exact resolution so I can simulate it in TMPEG or something... oh well, i guess I have to try and see..
But what about the question in my early post about frame rate.. ?

My suggestion is to drop tmpeg and try mgi video wave four there you have it what ever tmpeg black screens you on mgi will pick up it is wierd but it can encode any format thinkable to vcd and many options even a great capture program and if you do bump up frames per second and audio video is off sync use virtual dub to get a wave file of the movies sound and then use cool edit to stretch it though I have never had sync problems changing the fps.

Now I have gotten those programs.. and I wonder if you would want to describe steb by step how you convert to 25fps from 23.976fps, and "stretch" the wav so it wont be out of sync..

icehawk : all 16:9 DVDs are anamorphic.. Just encode it to SVCD and U get anamorphic 16:9 video. When U set 16:9 mode on TV, U will see it OK ..

Yeehaa.. I made it.. well, it dont think its true anamorphic tho, only simulated maybe.. but it worked out. Under the video tab I set Aspect Ratio to 16:9 625 Line PAL and under advanced tab i set Source Aspect Ratio to 4:3 625 Line PAL, and it seems great on the 16:9 TV.
And on the framte rate conversion, i didn't have to go the long way, i tried to let TMPEG convert it, and to my surprise it worked perfect to convert 23.976 NTSCfilm to 25 fps PAL..)
