Converting .avi to .mpg

I am trying to burn my first vcd's i have figured out that if the files are in .mpg that i can burn them using my roxio 5.0 easy cd burner if i use the make a DATA cd feature. I am not understanding what i have to do to convert an .avi file to a .mpg file i downloaded nemo codex and now i am able to play these files on my computer, but when i burn them there is nothing there. Is there anyone who can explain what i have to do like i am a 5 year old? I have searched this website and i dont understand half of it!

First of all....forget about using Easy Cd Creator.
Try something like VCDEasy.

ok i downloaded vcdeasy thanks, but i dont see anything there on how to convert the avi to mpg am i missing something??
