If I can fit an One Hour show on a 650MB CD-R, will I be able to fit about 7 hours on a DVD-R?

I'm going to be archiving Futurama and ENTERPRISE to VCD, but my DVD playre will not read CD-R disks and it WILL read DVD-R.

Can I put MPEG1 files onto a DVD?

If I use MPEG2 can I get better quality and still compress to 1hr= ~650MB?

Can you point me to NEWBE info for DVD authoring and what will and willnot work.

  2. Yes, you can put over seven hours of mpeg-1 video recorded at the standard rate of 1.15Mbps on a DVD-R.

The DVD specification allows mpeg-1 video. Audio must be 48Khz (not 44.1KHz like VCD/SVCD uses). While all PAL DVD players should play mpeg audio, there are some NTSC DVD players that cannot play mpeg audio because the DVD spec only requires either AC3 (dolby digital) or PCM (wave) for NTSC players. If the player has support for VCD, it should play a DVD with mpeg audio.

You might get a bit better quality with mpeg-2 video, since you could use variable bit rate (VBR) and still be within the usual mpeg standards. Quality is a very subjective thing (i.e. I might pick one to be better than the one you pick).
