  1. I am looking to convert my DV home videos to DVD format. I need the best possible quality no compromise. Does anybody know good guides for converting DV to DVD using CCE Encoder.

I also want to author my DVDs after processing through CCE.

    Thank you in advance.

  2. Take a look at these guides:

    http://doom9.org/mpg/dvdr-guides.htm

but bear in mind that they are primarily aimed at the re-encoding and re-authoring of ripped DVDs. Therefore, you may follow the majority of the techniques when using original miniDV material, but you will need to intelligently adapt the procedures where necessary to suit miniDV source files. For example, unless you wish to frameserve from the timeline of your NLE application, you will be able to ignore any talk of frameserving using AVIsynth etc., since Cinemacraft will directly accept miniDV AVI files as input. With the newer releases of Cinemacraft, you must ensure that the option for "Video" > "Offset Line", is set as "1", and not "0", to avoid problems with encoding bottom-field-first DV AVI files.

TMPGEnc dvd author only author...it does not encode/convert.

  5. Thanks for that Arky. I knew someone will refer me to those pages, but they seem to be little outdated and assume a good knowledge of CCE.

I have thinking about automating the task a little by using DVD2SVCD by changing the bit rate and letting it do the rest while I go to bed. I wonder if anyone have tried this method and what settings?

    Thank you.

  6. Another question can Adobe Preimere 6.5 use some sort of plugin for CCE encoder. There are some settings under File>Export Timeline>Movie>Settings>File Type>CinemaCraft Mpeg2?

    Thank you.

Just make sure and set your field order correctly, ie bottom field first, and make sure and set the luminence level to 0-255 for dv footage. Other than that, its basically like encoding any other footage. DV is interlaced, so don't check progressive frames and don't check zigzagg scan order. Just set your bitrate and use an image quality priority setting of 17-25 and that's really all there is to it.

Yes, you can framserve from Premiere to CCE. CCE comes with a plugin for premiere. Just istall it and you should have the CCE frameserver selectable in the output settings for project.

  8. I tried the settings you suggested Adam within the Priemere for CCE encoder, Set it 2 passes, it comes with error CCE can't export audio when you selected VBR. Changed the setting to CBR, it comes with error, Frame rate 1/1 is not supported.

It is not as simple for me! I am tearing my hair out here. What do I need to do?

    Thanks.

  9. I suggest not using CCE anymore. This guide is May 2002 that I did and I was experimenting. Since then I've read that CCE doesn't handle bottom field first well at all so best to look for another encoder to DV material.

I never found CCE any good for DV encoding. Ok it was fast and the quality was good but the field order issue became tedious. I would recommend using TMPG or even better (IMHO) MainConcept, but MainConcept is more expensive than TMPG.

  11. q1aqza, where do I find the demo for mainconcept. I think that I read it somewhere that Adobe Primere 6 uses Mainconcept encoder. I could be wrong there.

What sort of encoder does Ulead Moviefactory uses, is the quality better with TMPGEnc?

    Thank You

With DV source material, simply select a line offset of "1" in the new builds of CCE, and away you go. No problem. I actually paid for CCE Basic the other day, which is more than most users do, so I can assure you I have faith in the encoder for interlaced DV work, despite reservations with earlier builds.

Adobe Premiere 6.5 comes with MainConcept encoder (which is what I use). I believe the latest version of MovieFactory uses the MPEGNow encoder which is based on the MainConcept encoder, so in theory, should be good but I have never used it so I can't be sure. The earlier vesrion of Moviefactory I think used the Ligos encoder.

Thanks for the info, I'll give it a try sometime for a test (but it'll take a lot to budge me from the convenience, speed and quality from MC encoder direct from the Premiere timeline )

  14. I will stay off CCE Encoder for DV conversion.

I will try Adobe Priemer 6.5 encoder and Ulead MovieFactory 2. Another app I have been thinking of is Studio 8. IC7 is great for encoding DVD material, hopefully it uses the same encoder and will do a great job.

The idea of running everything throguh one app is appealing, then run your favourite DVD Authoring app to finish it off.

Thank you everybody for answering my queries.
