  2. You can create a VCD with permanant subtitles (that is they are part of the MPEG1 stream). In theory it's possible to make a SVCD with selectable subtitles; however, you need I-Author to do this (software is near impossible to find) and you DVD player has to support selectable subs on SVCD (which most do not, the subs will not work on your PC). However, you can make permanant subs on either VCD or SVCD.

    Here's the outline of steps:

    1) D/load the following:
    Virtual Dub
    and the VDub SSA filter
    http://www.virtualdub.org

    SubStaion Alpha
    and the SSA script convertor
    http://www.eswat.demon.co.uk/substation.html)

Install everything, including the VDub auxsetup to enable frameserving.

    2) Convert your script to SSA format

    3) Load VDub, apply any need filters (eg. resize) then apply the SSA filter and choose your script.

    4) Check the timing/sync of your script. (Read about shift/ramp in the SSA documents).

    5) Frameserve to your encoder (eg. TMPGenc)

This will allow you to create an x(S)VCD with permanant subtitles.
