  1. Hi All,

More n00b efforts by my hopeless self....

This afternoon I hurriedly ripped a DVD which DVDBackup decided not to decrypt. It copied the movie fine, I can play the .VOB files with VLC (But not Apple DVD player) no worries, but DTOX tells me the files are encrypted.

I'm away for the weekend & the original is at home, but I'd like my 6 gigs back soon please!

Is there any way to decrypt the .VOB files on my HD without having the original disk, in such a way that DTOX will accept them? I tried using DVDbackup again on the VIDEO_TS folder I had previously ripped to my HD but no dice.

    Any suggestions?

    Cheers

I am at a loss because by definition
YOU CANNOT COPY any of these files to your hard drive
    UNLESS they're unencrypted....

Can you boot into OS9 and use the other product (EXTRACTOR) to see the files that DVD BAckup couldn't fully un-encrypt?

Or has apple removed your ability to use any other OS but the latest and graetest (narrowing your options)

  4. Hmmm....the files are definitely there, and playable with VLC, but they're a total of 4.6GB so I can't burn them onto DVD-R & therefore need DTOX to compress, but it won't as it claims theyre compressed......

    I'll try booting into 9

Im also confused? How could you say in the 1st post you want your 6 gigs back, when now you say its 4.6GB.

When you did the backup, what was the VIDEO_TS folder size?
Did you have all the decryption options checked?

To get to 4.6 GB it sounds like you did use DVD2ONE, unless 6GB in 1st post was a typo.

Its known that sometimes DVD2ONE give you larger VIDEO_TS folders than you can burn (just a hare over 4.4GB) which yours sounds like it is.

The solution to this is to use a user defined setting of 4444 MB instead of the default. The processed file will then fit onto all types of DVD-R

I would also like to point out that just because the files are on the HD doesnt mean they are decrypted. Just putting in a dvd, opening the disk and locating the VIDEO_TS folder, copying to HD will put them on the HD and they are NOT decrypted, thus will not be accepted into DVD2ONE

I suggest getting the source DVD and repeating the process. If for some reason dvdbackup doesnt decrypt, use OSeX.

  6. Sorry about the confusion - the whole VIDEO_TS folder is 6.1GB, but the files for the movie only (no special features etc) are 4.6 GB (I was thinking of doing a 'dirty burn' so if nothing else I could play the files with VLC off a DVD-R, but its a hair too big)

I did have the decryption option checked (DVDBackup), but somehow it hasn't, as DTOX refuses to touch it.

Ohhh i see what you are saying now

the movie only related .vob's are 4.6 gigs when you just choose them out of the entire movie file.

The problem is as you are seeing they are still too large, likewise, if you were to pull them out and burn them alone as dvd, you dont have the associated other important video_TS files such that you wont have a standard dvd.

I dont see how dvdbackup is not decrypting the video_TS folder, it should have done that when you backed it up.

My suggestion, is to trash the folder you have, and reback up the dvd again. IF it still doesnt work, use another backup program like OSeX.

If that still doesnt work, you will have to try the OS9 backup program where you do this in 9.

    What dvd is this?

  8. Starting again sounds like the go.

If it helps, it was 'Ski Movie 3: The Front Line'

I had a couple of goes at ripping it and it just didn't play nice.

One more thing - what is the error that DVD Backup reports if you don't play the DVD in Apple DVD Player for a minute or so (Before you ask, I did play the movie before I ripped it :P )

    Thanks for the help.

To be honest, i dont know. Ive never gotten that error. Yes, you must let it load as a dvd, and let APPLE DVD PLAYER open, before you rip but you have done that.

Again, try it again, ensure that all the decryption options are checked, and DVD2ONE should accept it.

If not, use OSeX rip to DVD FOLDER and then put that to DVD2ONE

    hope this works!

  10. I forgot to launch apple dvd player and the extraction failed after about a minute ("unable to read disk" or something like that), I tried it again a few times and tried another drive but no dice. Then I launched apple dvd player, tried again and it worked fine.

Yep, thats why its a well known fact that you MUST let the dvd load into your APPLE DVD PLAYER before backing up!
