I am trying to watch/backup my copy of Lord of the Rings - FOTR Special Extended Edition, and it will NOT read/play on my PC. I have an LG DRD 8160B DVD-ROM and a Toshiba SD-R5002 DVD-R/RW drive. The LG will not recognize a disc in the drive, and the Toshiba will recognize the discs as blank media. I have updated all my latest firmware on both drives and even tried one of the DVD region killer programs. NADA!!!
Anyone know of a special LOTR codec or firmware that is needed to recognize these discs on my PC? All four discs either are unreadable or unrecognized.

Unless your region codes match, it won't play(or rip, generally speaking). Only other thing it may be is a bad disk, does it play on a friends computer?

I have not yet tried it on a different PC - but all four discs will not read/play/rip on my PC even though they all play on the standalone.

Call me insane but a backup doesn't have region control.
Just as a matter of interest, how many disks is this 'backup' ?

Good luck (I've backed it up fine with smartripper BTW).

Hi,
Had the same problem with LOTR, difference is that I am in Asia. But mucked around quite a bit and found out that since movies are on DVD-Video format, they are coded for a certain region of this planet i.e. Asia/U.S/Europe/Australia to prevent piracy. Now the problem arises when you are in one region but somehow get a DVD of another region. Most standalones are RPC-1(which in ordinary man's terms means that they are region-free or that they will play any DVD) but drives are trickier or they are RPC-2 meaning that they are region protected or they will play the DVD's of a certain region only. You can check whether your drive is RPC-1/2 but I strongly suspect that it is RPC-2 as mine was( what I mean by that is I made my drive a RPC-1 by flashing(nothing to do with breasts) the firmware of the drive or the main chip which makes the drive reads the disc. This is good and bad, because if you make even the slightest mistake while flashing the firmware, your drive is as good as junk. But if you are successful, then your drive will read any disc on earth. To check whether your drive id RPC-1/2, check the DEVICE MANAGER , right click on the properties for the DVD-drive and see the contents of the Region Tab.
Hope this info is of help. DONT FLASH THE DRIVE. IT COULD BECOME JUNK. BETTER YET GET AN ELECTRONICS GUY/TECHIE FRIEND TO DO IT.
P.S.: For flashing the firmware I don't thing it is legal for me to give you information on that but GOOGLE could help you out.
