  1. Hi everybody! I'm converted about 50 divx movies to vcd. I decided to start playing around with the bitrate and resolution on my vcd's. I have a panasonic rv27 dvd player which won't play xvcd. What I've found is I can raise the resolution upto 720x480 and the bitrate upto about 3500k/bps mpeg1 stream!,and still fit a 120 minute movie on 2 80min cdr's! The quality is amazing! I'm wondering if anybody has any idea why this works? I thought vcd had to meet pretty strict requirements to play in dvd players! thanx

my dvd player plays up to 8000 kb/s at 720x480. vcd is 352x240 at 1150 kb/s. anything else is an xcvd.

The maximums vary from one player to another. You'll just have to experiment.

Your player might handle XVCDs even though it's not listed in the compatibility list because the manufacturer may have changed the player without changing the name or model number. Most companies buy the parts for their players from other manufacturers, they might have changed suppliers or components partway through production.

its better to go with a lower resolution and higher bitrate than high resolution and lower bitrate. the higher bitrate will look smoother. the lower will have macroblocks as soon as something moves too fast.

i usually stick with 480x480. looks great on a regular tv, especially at high bitrates.
