  1. I see lots of info here on how to rip DVD's to (S)VCD/DIVX. However I want to rip to an original quality mpeg2 file and can not find anything on the topic. I know it will be big but that's not a problem.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

This is an easy one, and it's exactly the same steps as making an SVCD, with one small change.

I don't know if the downloads are here as well or not, but if not, get them from http://www.dvdhelp.us (there's good guides for all of these progs there as well, plus there's others around, including this site)

    Download the following:

    DVD Shrink
    DVD2AVI
    TMPGEnc
The DVDHelp.us TMPGEnc templates (use these templates specifically)

    1. Rip with DVD Shrink

    2. Frameserve to TMPGEnc with DVD2AVI

    3. Encode in TMPGEnc using the d2v and WAV files from DVD2AVI

Use the "SVCD-CQ NTSC" template, and click the CQ "settings" button. Adjust the Max bitrate to the highest level that you desire (probably around 5000 if you want to be sure that you can't tell the difference between your MPEG and the original) You can leave the min bitrate set at 900 if you like, or you can raise it as well. Just be sure to leave a decent amount of room between the two numbers (this is crucial, as it directly affects the way that CQ works... it needs "room to breathe", so to speak.)

Conversely, you can simply use the "DVD-CQ NTSC" template and essentially accomplish the same thing, but from what you asked, I'm assuming that you have a particular project in mind, so this will allow you to get in there and get your hands a little dirty.

No! Too many steps, unneeded work.

Want the original MPEG2 and audio files? Two steps...

    1. Rip to HD with DVD Decrypter.
    2. Use VOBedit. Demux VOBs to the HD. It extracts MPEG2 and PCM/MP2/AC3 files.

Done. There's the ORIGINAL streams, not a re-encode.
I'm not online anymore. Ask BALDRICK, LORDSMURF or SATSTORM for help. PM's are ignored.

Ok, I'll agree with you on this one. I just tend to discourage folks from using VOBEdit as it isn't exactly user-friendly. LOL
