  1. I know Virtual Dub and Avi Io, but they
    just don't seem to work
for me now..maybe my pc needs it's early re-install everything from scratch (which gives me a good opporturnity to try Win Xp fresh)

However could someone mention me some software both freeware and commercial that has a work-around to the Fat32 system's file-size limit in capture. Thank you :

My previous ASUS VGA capture card had a capture utility that automatically created another AVI file everytime the file reached 1Gb (to overcome the original AVI limitation).

VirtualDUB can also do segmented capturing and it's perhaps the best and most cost effective way to do it. The steps seem to be complicated at first, but if you visit the home page www.virtualdub.org, the documentation section makes it rather clear. You only need to invest 10-15 minutes to make it work.

Vitualdub also has another feature, to stripe captures to several different files residing on different HD spindles. This is a life saver when Disk I/O performance doesn't fit the capture requirements.

Finally, if all the above don't suite you, then you can perhaps consider capturing with a DivX codec. With constant quality set to 2, it can do good quality AVI files and they are small. The 4 Gb will not bother you for at least 2 hours of capture. Your 1700 CPU will probably manage the processing for realtime MPEG-4 compression.

And, of course, you should consider upgrading to an NTFS OS. I am a long time Win2K user, tried XP for a couple of weeks on my current system and quickly re-upgraded :P to Win2K to regain control of my computer. Video Editing and capture is all about large files and large drives. FAT32 is just beyond it's league there.
The more I learn, the more I come to realize how little it is I know.

  3. I already mentioned Virtualdub and Avi Io and I have some severe trouble (see my thread called VERY STRANGE PROBLEM) with them for some readon so they are totally out of the question.
