  1. I have been capturing with Vdub (huffy codec) and then converting to Mpeg2 DVD files for authoring and burning on DVDR.

What are your recomendations for Mpeg2 capturing as far as software so that i don't have to go the extra step of encoding. I want to try and keep the same quality i've been getting with Vdub.

I have an ATI 8500DV card

  2. I use windvdrecorder. It allows to write directly to dvd...or write DVD compliant MPeg2.

  3. I will have to take a look at that. Thanks.

  4. Why not use ATI MMC (better than WinDVD) ?

  5. I never cared much for MMC. I like their cards but there has to be something better. I don't have a problem with Vdub only that I want to try capturing and recording on DVD a little quicker.

I use Cyberlink PowerVCR2 for direct MPEG-2 caps. Great for capturing directly off the air, VHS, or LD. Its got a couple filters to get rid of static and do some medium smoothing. For capturing it works VERY well.
    Check it out...

Only drawbacks I've seen - the editing tool is very sloppy; like using a butchers knife to do filet work. Also, TMPGEnc does not support the MPEG-2 output (I use 'T' to extract the audio then do what I need and re-insert the audio, the 'merge & cut' tools are also great).

Now I'm off to evaluate WinProducer3...

  7. My recommendation is to stay away as far as possible from all of Intervideo's products. They all deinterlace the captured file, which is not desirable for SVCD and DVD, only for files you want to view exclusively on a computer monitor. For TV viewing, interlace must be preserved for top quality.
I'd recommend you try Ulead VideoStudio, MovieFactory or DVD Workshop, they also allow you to author the DVD, setting chapters, making a menu, etc. PowerVCR is OK, *if you hack out the deinterlacing feature* which is done by changing a setting in the registry.
The tip has been mentioned in these forums before. I can post it later, if you want, I don't know it off the top of my head.
But Ulead's software give better video quality than PowerVCR in my view. So that's what I use for on-the-fly mpeg-2 encoding.

  8. Please post which place in the registry I need to change. I spent last two nights trying to find the post in this forum where they mention it, but the mentioned post is nowhere to be found.

    My problem:
I got the ASUS tv tuner working with 480x480 and 352x480 and greater than 600mb as per instruction provided in this forum. The problem is that the captured videos do not burn as standard svcds.

I tried to change the "recdeinterlace" line in the registry from "01 00 00 00" to "00 00 00 00". HOwever, I still can not burn the captured video to CDs as SVCDs.

As a side note, I also tried the Ulead Movie Factory and was truly amazed by the noticeable difference such software could make on the same tv tuner card. Too bad Ulead does not make any sceduling software like Powervcr.

It does if you install the correct version of PowerDVD and the right update.
