  1. I am trying to transfer some various videos to DVD. I am kinda confused as to why the minutes are 110 but the acutal size of the combined vids is only 2.2GB. When I try to put anymore on I get a "cannot write to disk error" can someone explain this?

what are you using to write the disc, and what are you using to author the disc?

It sounds like your software is trying to reencode your videos to a much larger, bloated format.

Minutes mean nothing. This isn't like VCD, where there was only a few variations and minutes meant something.

Size of the file and length of video on your disc depends solely on the resolutions and bitrates of the audio and video files.

That was true with CD formats as well, but CD formats generally had less options. So most poeple just didn't notice.

  4. I used to use the Disc Wizard that comes with Cyberlink's PowerDirector Pro and it horribly under estimates the space on discs. You could start a brand new disc and drag a 2 GB file to it, and the bar that shows 0 - 4.3 GB would fill up and go past the 4.3 GB mark and tell you it was too big.

I had similar problems with Nero's Vision Express.

You could chop off a few minutes here and there and get the video cut down to the point where the software would show it would just barely fit and when the disc was done, you could tell by looking that the disc wasn't half full and a quick directory check would confirm it.

I started using Pegasys's TMPegEnc DVD Authoring program and it works really well. It's 'disc full' bar is much more accurate and has yet to mislead me like Disc Wizard.

It's too bad, because the rest of Cyberlink's PowerDirector Pro is pretty much flawless.

  5. I am using Ulead Movie Factory. I am transferring some cartoons off of vcd to dvd.

I followed the vcd to dvd guide here. Ulead does re-encode the video. should I use something to re-encode them first before authoring with Ulead?

I would suggest reencoding them with another prog, so you know what size file you are dealing with before going to the authoring stage. This will probably give you more control over your files than Ulead will

I like TMPGenc, but there are plenty of other encoders around. Download a couple and see what you like best.

  7. Actually file size depends on bitrate and runtime. Resolution DOES NOT affect file size (only quaility of the video). You can use a bitrate calculator to dermine the bitrate to completely fill your DVDR.

    But basically [(4,300,000,000 * 8) / 60] / runtime = total bitrate per sec

Subtract out the bitrate of your audio and there you go.

Was only referring to equivolancies. As in a 352x480 MPEG2 at 4 MB/S will look about as good as a 720x480 MPEG2 at 8 MB/S. That should be taken into account when creating video content.
