Every once in awhile(for certain videos that I make into DVDs), I like to "get fancy" and add special effects.

I have a WAV file I'd like to add to a DVD I'm making of an old VHS home movie that I've capped recently.

The video is of my family when my teenage kids were all tiny and the WAV is of the song, "The Way We Were".

I think it would be a nice effect, but don't want the music to play during the movie.....I Only want it heard during times when the chapter menus are being displayed.

Is there an authoring program that will do that?

That would really be cool, and I could use other songs during menu display on other family videos too(possibly comical songs).

I use a Dazzle capturing system that Only lets me capture into Mpeg. So that is all I work with. I never do any DV/AVI video.....

  2. There are a number of authoring programs that will let you do this; the ones that come immediately to my mind, at least, are Ulead's relatively user-friendly products, DVD Workshop and DVD Movie Factory. I'm guesing MyDVD and most others do this, too.

Some things to keep in mind: when using sound for a menu, it will not play seamlessly between menus. It's just not possible with DVD format. Second, while some programs might convert it for you (I'm pretty certain Ulead's do) your wav will have to be 48khz, 16 bit PCM in order to play on a DVD. These concerns aside, it should be easy to accomplish in just about any program.

I'd reccomend DVD Workshop. It's got a real nice, simple interface, but allows for a bit of customization. I myself use DVDMaestro, which is probably too advanced for simply making family movies.

    Thanks, Kuranuk

I figured it must be possible somehow. I know commercial movies use it sometimes during menu display.

I'll take a look at MF(I have that one)and WS, but I have never seen that option before. All I'd noticed was the option to add audio during the video was available. I've been able to do that with VideoStudio7, but only during the video.

When you say not seemless between menus, please tell me what you mean?

  4. Why not use Dolby Digital 2.0 @ 224 kbit/sec instead? It takes up a lot less space on the disk and you won't notice any quality difference.

    Chazzie,
Will MovieFactory be able to use AC-3 audio(Dolby Digital)? I know the Ulead's VideoStudio7 will not let you import video files that contain it(although I've heard that WS will).

Please tell me about 224 Kbps Dolby Digital music?( I've read that Dolby Digital encodes these multi-channel soundtracks at either the 448 kbit/sec or 384 kbit/sec data rates)

Please tell me so I'll understand how I can use that, OK?
