  1. I have used TmpegEnc, to convert a few avi files, but when I do this, it seems to make it so that the created MPEG files are not Standard CD compatable. So when I try to burn using Nero, it won't burn the VCD, until Nero has converted the file to Standard CD Compatable and the quality is not that great. The MPEG has to be Standard CD Compatable as my dvd player won't play SVCD, or any VCD that are not created as Standard CD Compatable. I have used TMPEGEnc in the past using the same steps and been able to create the mpeg file as a Standard CD Compatable, so I don't know if I have accidentally changed a setting or something, but it no longer works.

So if anyone knows which setting may have been changed, please let me know, otherwise I am trying to find out what the best program would be for converting avi files to MPEGs. If TmpegEnc is the best one, others that are close would be fine.

    Thanks in advance.

  2. Hi Hawthorn,

if you want to use TMPGEnc to create VCD-compatible MPEG-1 files, then use the templates - perhaps you've switched off the Wizard which asks you which template you want to use for your conversion at step 1.

I would download the latest version (from TMPGEnc site) and the templates/wizard should be enabled straight away.

If it is not, go to File -> Project Wizard (or press CTRL and W).

Then all you have to do is choose NTSC or PAL templates for VCD.

TMPGEnc should then produce a stream which Nero will recognise as VCD-compliant.

TMPGEnc is almost certainly the easiest (and one of the best) freeware tools for converting avi files to MPEG-1 for VCD. I'd try and get it working rather than use an alternative. If you really want to try a different one, BBmpg is well thought of, it's freeware, and it also does MPEG-2 encoding, and some of the MPEG-tools functions of TMPGEnc such as (de)multiplexing. See the tools section of this site.

    ' hope that helps,
    mcdruid.
