I've noticed that a lot of new videos are being distributed on the Internet in the Ogg Vorbis container format, .OGM.

OGM supports subtitle tracks (integrated into the .OGM file, but not burned into the video track), multiple audio tracks, et cetera. A lot like MOV/MP4, but able to play more easily across platforms. Also, there's the appeal of the format being totally open source. OGM files officially contain XviD video and Ogg Vorbis audio. It's definitely better then AVI.

Playing these files on the Mac is easy with VLC. However, to the best of my knowledge there's no way to create them. Would it be possible to add OGM support to ffmpegX? The XviD is there, but an OGM muxer and a Vorbis audio encoder would need to be added. Support seems to be appearing rapidly on the PC side of things, so I assume it's not a huge obstacle.

And at last we can add the "mkv" support... the Matroska ! This one is the best container in world on the paper and is near to replace the "ogm" format.
