I bought a DRU-500AX last Saturday from (CA) Future Shop and am thinking of returning it (I bought it with a Gift Certificate, so my choice was limited to what Future Shop sell). The problem is not really with the DU-500AX but with my DVD player. This is a Toshiba 2800 and it seems to need bitsetting to be able to read DVD+RW. It seems that Sony still haven't provided any solutions to the bitsetting issue for the DRU-500AX.
Of course, I could buy a new DVD Player which reads DVD+RW without bitsetting, but why would I want to spend the extra money.
I could just burn DVD-RWs on my DRU-500AX, and be compatible with the Toshiba player, but then I don't really need a dual-standard DVD writer.
My internal DVD writer options at Future Shop, if I return the DRU-500AX are HP DVD300i DVD+RW (if it is bitsetter compatible ... I haven't checked yet), Mitsumi DW-7801TE DVD+RW, or Pioneer DVR-A05 DVD-R/RW. However, all of these drives, except for the Mitsumi, are more expensive than the Sony (I got it heavily dicounted).
I may just end up keeping the DRU-500AX and burning DVD-RWs, given that the Pioneer, which I would otherwise probably favour, is more expensive. Keeping the Sony is probably the logical solution, if it does a good job with DVD-RW.
Any advice on my limited options?
Of course, I could trade in the DVD-writer for a washing machine
Thank you
GordonJ
