Frame serve from VirtualDub. Before starting frameserver, set start and end to first/second/last piece of the AVI. Using TMPGEnc and apropriate VCD wizard, set this ???.vdr as video (and audio) source.

  4. Did you follow this guide https://www.videohelp.com/virtualdubedit.htm? It's pretty straight forward. Don't forget to choose "direct stream copy" under audio and video.

Read the guides and how-tos related to avi to vcd conversion. Read the documentation for the software these guides recommend. It's all here.

    OK, using VirtualDub:
    Load your source AVI.
Check audio and video stream settings to direct stream copy.
Move the pointer in the time line to set start and end of first part (cursor at beginning - click mark in. Cursor 1/3 to the right - click mark out).
Choose Save AVI from file menu. Repeat for 2nd and third part. Use these three AVI as source for TMPGEnc.
Ta save you the trouble / storage space needed for the three AVI's replace "Choose Save AVI from file menu" with "Start frame server... from file menu" and use the .vdr as source for TMPGEnc.
If you have trouble frame serving from VDub to TMPGEnc, see the guide here.

If you're getting a 10 GB file from a 700 MB source, you are not using direct stream copy, at least not for video. Unless your source AVI is totally f*cked up to begin with.

    And again: Use frame serving.
