XVID Conversion....Extract WAV or Not?

I've heard conflicting opions as to whether XVID to MPEG 1 conversions should use a no compression .WAV as the audio source or not ?
I usually feed the XVID directly into TMPGenc and it seems to be ok other than a slight sync issue (nothing major).
Is this typical?

Audio has nothing to do with what encoder is used for the video stream. If audio should be extracde first (or not) is entirely dependent on how the audio is encoded. So, it doesn't matter if it's DivX, XviD or anything, as these only deal with video. Possibly XviD encoded videos more often come interleaved with exotic audio streams, but again this is not "hard coded" into the XviD video compression.
However, since extraction and decoding of audio is simple and not that lengthy, I tend to always extract and decode audio to wav before encoding to mpeg1/2, possibly normalizing in the process.
