  1. I bought 20 COMPUSA DVD-R discs last time, and all of them were burned at 2x speed successfully with SONY DRU-500AX. I Bought 20 discs this time, and have burned 2 at 2x speed and had no problems. I used Easy CD Creator 5 to burn them, because the software allows me to select burning speed and displays the real burning speed.

  2. OK for all you people that are burning these at 2x with the DRU-500AX what firmware are you running? I have the 2.0f with recordnow dx and the estimated time to completion initially comes up as 15min then it jumps up to over 60min and it finishes in over 60min. Same drive burns Verbatim + at 2.4x and - at 2x with no problems.

  3. I bought a bunch of those discs before and I just picked up some more since its on sale again. I haven't had any problems with them. They burnt fine on my Pioneer A05 at 2x with the hacked firmware. The discs played back on my Sony, Toshiba, Panasonic, and PS2 Dvd player.

I have to agree with some of the posters right here that most of these no name brand discs (CompUSA, and Khypermedia) are ok. I went through 40 of each at least. The problem I think is that maybe the Sony writer doesn't write that well at 2x on media that are only rated 1x. My friend burned one of his own movies onto a Compusa disc and it burnt fine with his Sony DRU 500. The movie played back fine on the the dvd player, but when he tried to access the special features the cannot read disc error appear immediately. I burnt the same movie on my Pioneer and it played (even the speacial features that didn't work before) without problem. We both burnt the movie at 2x. This leaves me to believe that the Sony writer is at fault not the media. Just my opinion.

  4. Just for the heck of it I backleveled the firmware on my 500AX to 1.0f and now the compusa media burns at 2x using nero. Downgrade actually turned out to be an 'upgrage'. Now I gained a feature of 2x burning but not comfortable with this though since I'm not sure what features or improvements I'm giving up on the newer 2.0f firmware. Anyone know?

  5. You can try 1.0g. It does the same thing. Though I had 1.0f but was wrong its 1.0g

Done video and data. No problems on these and others DVD CD etc.
If worried click on the check data flag.

There is one strange thing about my Sony. When my Sony arives it had a light pink crinkle plastic forming a cord tied around the box. When the 500 became avaiable again in stores, I notist once in a while the same thing tie around one or two boxes.

After my Sony DRU-500A died shortly after the third firmware update I'm not going to make the same mistake onthe new 500AX. Today I bought 50 of the CompUSA DVD-R discs. I burned five of them and four burned at 2x and one at 4x wtf weird. Anyway the discs look good and all played great on the three DVD players at home.

So are you saying that drive failure was the direct result of the firmware update? What firmware did you have on your 500A and what did you upgrade to? Also what firmware do you have on your 500AX that allows 2x burning on the compusa media?

Run to Office Depot if you have one in your area. They have 15 pack Verbatim DVD+ or - R for $32.77 and you get the 2nd 15pack free. Limit 1 per customer/day but you may be able to get away with more depending on the CSR. Their +Rs are 4X to boot. Make sure you get the 4x and not the old 2.4x though since they have both at the same price. I ended up returning all my Compusa ones.

  13. shit..i.'ll do that now...i have one close to me...that brings the price to around a dollar a disk.....I would settle for my ACCU's...but those pricks at cdr and meritline decided the old supply demand game was better then a sweet profit and good return customer's.....I know it's business...but to jack up a price $15 for 100 pack is ridiculous....I shoulda said ACCU suck...and hoarded them all for myself...as it is...that's a hell of a deal for 4x media!

Al I'm sayong is the drive worked fine until I started messing with firmware updates so maybe the failure is related. My Sony DRU500AX firmware is whatever came with the drive (I think it's 2.0e).

Sorry. The sale died on 31 of May. Sheech where is this year going! It already June!

Burned over two boxes so far and no hickups and verified data on all!

4x at that price would be nice.

  16. @nightwing...that's ok..because thanks to sidewinder I was able to go to Office Depot and get the last 4 15 pack spindles of DVD-R's...I prefer -R to +R, although I would of taken the +R had they been 4x...they just were all out of them......but to get 2 FREE 15 pack spindles of Verbatim disks was insane...I went straight to the manager and told him I wanted more then one spindle...he told me no probl...and the girl gave me both...it was supposed to be one per customer per day or some crap...anyway, that is a hell of a deal. I'm gonna check and see if the deal is still on tomorrow and see if I can't steal a couple of 4x DVD+R's for free!

Good lookin' out sidewinder.....I appreciate that hook up! 8)

New deal: Office Depot: Buy ONE 15-pack for $30, get ONE free: Verbatim DataLifePlus DVD-R and DVD+R discs. Seem fine to me, worth $1 each. Some are Mitsu, some are CMC. In each case, still worth $1 each.

EDIT: Hmmm... looks like somebody beat me to it.... that's what I get for just reading PAGE 1 and not PAGE 2. :P
I'm not online anymore. Ask BALDRICK, LORDSMURF or SATSTORM for help. PM's are ignored.

  18. This is getting strange! But nice in the wallet department!

Wondering if this is the start of DVD burnners finaly going to eat up the CD burnner market?

May see if the two local ones have any. Even though I have a pile of blanks right now. One can never have enough blanks!
