Hi,
I don't know, may be I'm lucky with my Sony but whatever I throw in so far burns like breeze. It still has the firmware it came with /2.c/ and it burns both -R and +R at 4X without any problems /knock on wood/.
And now with the prices of 4X media at $2 and less I'm more than happy with my drive.
I always stick to mid price media. Most of the problems I read about here are with cheap media being used. Common guys, istead of saving few cents and buying junk get some descent media and solve your problems.
Let's not forget that there's no free lunch!
Enjoy!

As far as sony not making good products. I've always considered them very nice. My Sony TV is great, no problems. My old sony walkman survives to this day. On the same note I've had problems from a sony VCR and been through 3 of the original Playstations within the systems lifespan. So I guess it just depends on the product itself with sony.
I do not own a sony drive, but personally I'm happy with my Pioneer mainly because of the excellent luck I've had with media compatibility. Oh yeah and the hacked firmware that unlocks the 105s ripping speed is nice also. -
i think somebody at the pinnacle instant cd/dvd forum had mentioned that
is how their computer recognized the burner -

As for media you can reliabley burn at 4 times...
I use Verbatim Datalife Plus rated at 1-4x and they have burned at 4x every time. Give them a try.
No problems here...I use Verbatim DVD+R 4X and burn at 4X everytime.Geronimo -
I am on my second one now, the first one had some hardware problems, but the one I have now has no problems. I burn everything a 2x and it comes out perfectly.

I have this drive as well. I am able to burn any cd (music/data/vcd) with no problem. If i try to burn ANY type of dvd, (DVD-R, DVD+r, DVD+rw) it craps out.
Question: What do you guys use to make your backups? Perhaps its my software, not the drive, as i get the errors immedietly, and teh disc is still blank after the error.
I have tried to follow the guides multipule times, but no luck.
Please advise. -

The drive technically is still a 500a. The only thing that
makes it the 500ax is the firmware upgrade. So your
system will still read it as the 500a. -
