looking for the best progressive scan dvd player for the money? people that have seen the different quality pictures different brands/models produce. i'm wanting to upgrade my dvd player, but don't want to spend the money if i'm not going to notice a good difference between what i have now and what i'm going to buy. the only format i car that the new dvd player can play are vcd's... other than that it doesn't matter. i've heard alot about apex and others about how well they play vcd's and svcd's... but i'm not interested in that... just plain video quality output. thanks for any help and advice, peace![]()

If you've done any research into progressive scan players at all, you know that the extra money spent is worth it. I have a Pioneer DV-434 (on sale as low as $159) which is advertised as a progressive scan player. It is an absolutely wonderful player for DVDs, VCDs, SVCDs, and even Sefy's SxVCDs. Playback of all kinds is the best that I've seen on consumer-grade players.
However, as a progressive scan player it does a poor job (from what I've read). I don't care about progressive scan so the 434 is perfect for me. I have the 434 attached to a flatscreen Toshiba 20" TV via component video and the results are absolutely breathtaking.
Of course you know that you need a progressive scan TV... a PS dvd player by itself doesn't offer any benefits. -

that was my point... i want the extra money i spend to be for video quality and not on vcd, svcd, xvcd playback. that's why i posted this question so i could get feedback from people that have had expereince from these different progressive scan dvd players... and not just what they claim.
thanks for the input and the advice that i need a progressive scan tv, but i have a toshiba 55 in progressive scan hdtv ready set. thanks for your input and anyone else's advice is much appreciated, peace -
The new JVC DVD players are nice. I have seen one used on a '47 Widescreen Panasonic Television.
