  1. I just got a KWorld MPEG 2/TV Tuner card (took days to get it to work with VIA chipset but now works fine).

I would like to be able to capture using the onboard MPEG chip with a better prgram than WinDVR which the board comes with. Unfortunately Virtual Dub does not do this. Will either Vegas or Premeire, or any other software of that caliber access the oncard MPEG chip?

My intention is to be able to apply correction filtering at the time of capture without having to re-encode, etc.

    Thanks in advance.

The Kworld doesn't have hardware mpeg encoding. It uses a Brooktree chip, or a Conexant Fusion 878A chipset, which is just a newer version of the Brooktree, since Conexant bought them out.

The mpeg encoding is done through software.

If you don't like WinDVR, you can try Ulead products, these use realtime software encoding.

For best results, you could capture uncompressed, or use a lossy codec such as huffyuv, then filter, then encode with a stand alone encoder like TMPG.

  3. I Have the Kworld tv878-RF-Pro (http://www.kworld.com.tw/products/pro2/kw-tv878rf-pro.htm ).

It uses the Conexant Fusion 878A and does have a hardware MPEG encoder chip on board capable of MPEG 1 or 2.

The WinDVR software lets you select which compression you want to use depending upon what resolution you want to capture at.

you can try NeoDVD or Power VCR as well, both will capture as mpeg.

No hardware encoding. That's why you have to use a real time software encoder like WinDVR. WinDVR does not interface with any hardware mpeg capture cards.

Take at look at your CPU usage while encoding a DVD resolution and bitrate file.

A hardware mpeg encoder uses 1%-7% CPU.

I have the same card. Bought it at computergeeks for $32, they now sell it for $38. http://www.compgeeks.com/details.asp?invtid=TV878RF-PRO

  6. Wow! I didn't realize this. The box and ads, etc. of course read like the card is capable of MPEG encoding. I probably should have kept my old WinTV card, but considering the Kworld is bundled with the WinDVR software I suppose it was still a good deal (paid $32 at a computer show), and I get a radio and a remote!

I guess this changes my question: What other software will do real time MPEG2 encoding upon capture and still allow real time processing/filtering of the capture?

I did capture 1-1/2 hours of family videos in 720 x 480 at 8000 CBR with no frame loss using WinDVR so I am quite impressed with that (hence why I thought the card had the encoder onboard).

    Thanks!

I like housepig's suggestion of PowerVCR(II). It looked to me as if the quality was better than the others, decent mpeg tools too. Supports pause, FF/RW of live TV, lots of tinkering if you want.

Any Ulead software (Movie Factory, Media Studio, Visual Studio, DVD Workshop), free demos available.

NeoDVD is nice also, as it includes simple/easy authoring software, plus a free demo.

My girlfriend uses the card with Dazzle DVD Complete to record her "shows".

Sonic's MyDVD and Cyberlink's Power Director are couple of others.
