  1. Has no one wanted to do this?

I thought it would be fun to edit together a compilation of clips from various films -- we've all seen these in awards shows and other promos. I want to use Premiere, and take advantage of all the power of putting alternate sound underneath, video effects, transitions, etc (which is why Womble won't do it for me).

I can easily rip my DVDs into VOBs, and I can demux them so I have m2v but then I'm stumped. I'd love to be able to just import this into Premiere but of course it has no option for that. So converting it to DV-AVI seems to be the best bet but I see no software anywhere for that purpose.

Is this just something that has never occurred to anyone before? I would think with the advent of DVD authoring that at least some folks who have erased their DV original footage might want to use this approach to go back and reedit (yep, I know about loss of quality, but I'm not really that concerned about it for my purposes).

  2. When I had to do the same thing, I searched and found Vidomi Encoder, which did exactly that. Seems to be geared towards making DivX files, but you can choose your codec and make an AVI using whatever.

There are other options (DVD2AVI), but this one's pretty simple.

if you have a 3rd party codec for dv (like canopus or mainconcept) , you can just use virtualdub mod ..

you can also use vegas or video factory or ulead (mux m2v into a program stream) .. but if you use those you would hardly need Premiere ..

Thanks! That looks like it just might do what I need.

I tried an exhaustive search myself but the closest I came was a Premiere plugin costing nearly as much as Premiere. Since I don't intend to do this very much (and just for fun) this is a *much* better solution.

Virtualdub mod? Is that a program?

MainConcept I have (with Premiere 6.5, natch) but I can't use it to manage input, only output (although I also bought the standalone version, it still doesn't have DV for input). I'm guessing vitualdub is some sort of frame server, but I'm not sure how it's going to serve the mpeg frames into DV if I can't get the mpeg into Premiere in the first place.

I'll do some searches, but if you can be more specific I'd like to hear about it (although the above poster gave me the answer I'll probably use, as my tag says I always believe in having more tools...)
