  1. Rather than upgrading my whole system, I've decided to get a Malata VCD recorder to play with.

I mainly want to archive my VHS and Hi8 tapes, and maybe some DSS stuff without having to have a computer do 14 hrs of processing on it first.

My question is this: Once I've used the Malata to capture and create a VCD/SVCD can I then throw that disc in my computer, and edit out any parts/split it/join it or do any other processes using the software available here, or use the Pinnacle Software that came with my capture card to add titles/transitions etc. and can I add chapter points to it somehow and then burn the final product back to a (S)VCD with the burner in my computer?

    thanks
    Brent

I too have been looking at the Malata. If you have anything
to share...I would appreciate it...I have asked this Q in
many forums but I gather this is a new product with little
    user info/experience.

  3. You may be able to cut and join VCD, but it's very difficult for SVCD. I have searched this site for cut/join tool for SVCD to no avail. Actually there are, but those cost money.
Adding title/transition to VCD/SVCD is even tougher. If you have tool to do it, quality loss is guarantied.
Video editing is best done on AVI file to preserve quality.

  4. I purchased the Malata about a month ago. After 3 weeks of intense testing, the unit died. I got a replacement from AVDeals and these are my comments on the unit:

    1) Recording on VCD is very poor. NOT VHS QUALITY! There are always sync problems and heavy pixelation.

    2) Recording on SVCD is excellent (about S-VHS quality), but unstable (due probably to bad media)

    3) To find the right media is a NIGHTMARE. I've tried it all and in 20% of cases the unit gets stuck and I have to start all over again. The problem is even more serious with CDRW.

    4) AVDeals includes an addedum to the instructions where they recommend using 4X or 8X (not 16X), and never spindled CDRs. DOES ANYONE KNOW WHICH IS THE BEST BRAND FOR THIS UNIT? The problem I find right now is that most media are 16X and if you want a decent price you need to get them in a 100 spindle.

Please share your comments on the MALATA.
