  1. I have managed to convert an AVI to a VCD and play it on my Toshiba DVD Player. What I am unclear about is:-

Can I improve on the quality of the source AVI? What I would ideally like to do is convert AVI and DivX files into a format that utilises Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound.

Is this possible or am I restricted to the original format of the AVI and DivX file?

  3. Depending of the quaility of the AVI you might be able to make a better quaility MPEG encode, but you can't make an encode better than the source. If your source is DivX, well...
If your source is DVD, you can make some VERY nice x(S)VCDs that are DVD quaility.

Try some of the filters in Vdub, they can improve the quality of the DivX before you encode to VCD.

Also load the DivX.AVI into http://www.goldwave.com and normalize the audio, then save as WAV (Stereo). TMPGEnc can encode your original AVI with a diffrent source for the audio (Your new WAV)
