I have been using tmpgenc to convert all my avi files, and it is great. I was just wondering how long it usually takes everyone to convert a 700 mb avi to mpeg 2.

I've had it go as long as 18 hrs and as fast as 9. Depends on the qiality of the finished product that you want. Also depends on wether or not you're using the pro edition so you can take advantage of the cashing function.

I must be doing something wrong. I have a Pentium 4 1.5 with 256 ram, and the avi I am converting now says it will take 60 hours.

When I encode about 45 minutes of video it can take anywhere from 3 hours to 21 hours, depending on the resolution, if I'm upsizing or downsizing the resolution, and what (if any) filters I apply. I've also found that which filters I use also affects the encoding time - i.e. the noise reduction filter takes longer than the deinterlace filter.

I have an AMD1800 on Win XP Home.
These are with no filters and high quality (Slow) motion search.
For a DVD conversion to SVCD, CBR is 2 times movie length and VBR is 4x
Captured AVI to SVCD, CBR is 3 x source length and VBR is 6x
