Hello people,
I'm a newbie. I just purchased my DRU500 Sony DVD burner. I have an older Hauppage capture card (7years old). Does it make any difference if the capture card is older? Will the quality turn out not as good as the new ones?
I'm trying to capture using VirtualDub then convert to Mpeg using TMPGEnc then burn to DVD using MovieFactory. It turns out the DVD is not as in good quality as I expected. I have followed all the steps and nothing works. I'm just wondering if it has something to do with an older capture card. Please help me, y'all. Thank you so much.
Richard

I would HATE to have a capture card that old. I don't know how I ever put up with them. Try a new toy. It'll be worth it. Only if your card was VERY high-end at the time would it be comparable to something consumer-end by today's standards.
I'm not online anymore. Ask BALDRICK, LORDSMURF or SATSTORM for help. PM's are ignored. -
I have opposite opinion. Technology in TV cards today is nearly the same as 7 years ago, the only difference is the price, cheaper now of course.
It is difficult to guess why you do not get good quality.....
which capture application do you use?
which driver?
which resolution?
which compression?
which settings do you use to convert to Mpeg?
It can be many things..... -
Only 2 issues with my older avermedia TV98.
1) The tuner sound is mono. When I jump the sound to the line-in of my sound card I have to use a mono cable to get good sound on both channels otherwise I only get the right channel and low sound with hiss in the left. I can play a bit with the mixer but with only partial success.
If your older tuner/capture card has stereo capabilities then it is not an issue.
2) There is a problem in trying to capture 640x480 (or greater) in overlay mode using older vfw drivers (not with wdm) but it's not a problem in preview mode. That may not be a problem with all cards.
In my case, these 2 things might justify upgrading to a better card. The mono sound is not new technology. I just needed to save some bucks when I bought my card quite a few years back. I wasn't planning to capture then, just watch TV.
Prices have gone down and it's easier to get a full featured card for the same or less dollars.
Not to contradict anyone but tuner card chipsets have changed a bit ie.. bt848, bt878 and bt879. ATI and others have changed chipsets also.
Whether for better or worse you would have to judge for yourself. There's not much to do but then I can't do much anyway. -
