  1. i am thinking of just building a mini computer in a small desktop case with a good video card with tv out

    not a whole lot more in price than a good dvd player and this could play all formats as well as be an awesome MP3 jukebox.

    $100 cpu/motherboard
    $ 20 memory
    $ 80 20 gb HD
    $110 geforce 2 w tv out
    $ 25 better soundcard
    $ 30 desktop case
    $ 40 wireless mouse/keyboard
    $ 65 DVD player

    $470 without burner

    add a burner for $70

    i think i am going to go this route.. add a nic and have cable modem on tv

    I am ready to do exactly the same, with parts from older PCs...
    I shall control it with a wireless keyboard, and I will connect it to my TV, no monitor.
    For TV card, I 'll use a kyro-2 based card, which ain't nvidia GF3, but for my needs is perfect
    I shall use that pc as a multimedia terminal:
    mp3 player
    Game console for emulators (mame, raine, genesis, ZX spectrum, even PSX is possible nowdays...)
    mpeg 2 player
    Satellite stream grabber
    And maybe, encoder (if I put an athlon inside)

    But DVD standalones and pc's ain't the same...
    Totally different things...

  3. Hi all,

    I'm thinking of going down this road as well. A player that does it all. Well, for all of you who are thinking of building one of these (Or already have on...) have a look here :

  4. i did however forget component video support, progressive scan video, and digital audio outputs... all of these would be needed to have a complete player.
